Poundland snobbery?

A shop is a shop. What a ridiculous woman! It depresses me that there are people in the world who are really that obsessed with what people think. Mind you, I know women like that. My boss buys her cleaning products at Waitrose. Our office is on the same street as Wilkinsons. On a couple of occasions I have pointed out that her favourite cleaning brands are considerably cheaper at Wilkinsons, but she said she wouldn't be seen dead in there. My aunt is also a snob and paid £75 for a kettle in John Lewis despite the fact that the same kettle was £50 in Argos and Currys.
What amuses me about that article is that 'posh' shops can be just as hellish. Has Petronella never tried battling her way through Selfridges on a Saturday? Has she not dealt with the extra-rude shop assistants in many luxury stores? I would certainly rather deal with the cheery staff in my local Poundland than the miserable women in my local upmarket department store.0 -
I think the plastic rubbush distracts from the real bargains.
We've just had a Poundland open in our town and my mother made some really snobbish comments.
She will quite happily go out of her way to go to the greengrocers because they are cheaper than Morrisons though !
I suspect once she realises she can get her handcream etc cheaper then she will change her ways !Decluttering, 20 mins / day Jan 2024 2/20 -
OH drags me in there, and I have to be honest I'm not a fan. Everything he buys from there ends up in the bin. The batteries last barely a quarter of the time regular duracells do, the gadgets he buys are frankly pants, the toys fall to bits and in some cases things are more expensive (salad dressing for £1.00 and its only 59p in Home Bargains!)
So no, not a fan here, sorry! I feel for me personally its false economy.0 -

That woman has a terrible attitude.
Yes some places have dodgy people, but not everyone is!
And she tried to make the staff look impatient and grouchy, by taking the p*ss and asking stupid questions.
Silly woman.
I love the 99p shop.Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

You have know roughly what the prices of things are in other shops to know if you can save anything in there really. Easiest thing to do is have a good browse in there, then when you go to asda or wherever you will check the prices of different things, as its easier to remember something is £1 in poundland than remember the prices of 100's of different things in other shops!
I buy lots of things in there, mostly bargains for my son. They quite often seem to stock Tommee Tippee dummies and food pots and things which I use for him, which are usually a saving of about £2+. But I wouldnt buy much in the way of food, or cleaning products unless they are branded ones, as they are generally cheaper in wilko
as are lots of health and beauty bits if you can get them on offer elsewhere! Mummy to

Well she is concentrating on the food that they sell which is of course not their forte. Anyone would get fat if that's all they ate.
News articles like that are written to cause controversy. It's not worth getting our knickers in a twist over it.0 -
I think she's trying to be a bit tongue in cheek, but it isn't that funny or informative. Of course pound shops are cheap - the clue is in the name.

Wasn't there a thread recently that made it into the weekly email about what to and what not to buy from pound shops? There is a lot of tat, but there are also good deals to be found. OH and I regularly buy bin bags, toilet roll, cleaning products and milk from ours.0 -

I only buy the brand name stuff so I have never experienced these problems. I have bought Kodak batteries (20 for £1) and they lasted exactly the same amount of time as my normal batteries. My best bargain was some St Ives body lotion. It was exactly the same type as I usually buy. I bought 10 bottles and they lasted me for months!0 -
My daughter loves poundland... If she's a good girl, Daddy gives her a pound... I take her to poundland and she can choose anything she likes in the whole shop...
I prefer the 99p shop... You really feel you get a bargain in there...

We really need people to be snobby like that and not shop at Poundland - logic to this is - if more expensive stores can't sell stuff it will get shipped to Poundland and the like, but if they don't use the expensive shops, these shops will go out of business, so no reason for Poundland etc to keep prices low. Weren't such as Woolworths and Littlewoods etc originally the "Poundlands" of their day.
I hope this makes sense0
