Failed Driving Test

I failed my driving test in Nov with 7 minors and 1 serious fault. The serious fault was for going over the other side of the road when doing the left reverse.

I have another test booked next week and have not done a left reverse since! I feel confident that I will fail! Mt instructor just says that my left reverse is fine and if I fail i am just not ready.

Think it may be time to look for another instructor?

Do you think I should cancel my test and look for another instructor or intensive course?

Aw Im sorry. Better luck next time.

I say stick with your currrent instructor and quit the hassle of having to get a new one and all that.

Most people have to go through quite a few driving tests before they pass...
  • Perhaps your instructors not wanting it to prey on your mind too much. They may be confident in your ability and will get you to do one or 2 next lesson.
  • Thats what I thought - I am worried though i have nt driven enough since my test. Have only had 2 lessons and one more booked before my test. If i fail this time think i will ditch my instructor. She doesnt seem to have the time for me.

Real confidence giving post that is, I used to meet pupils at test centres that said that they where usually the ones that had failed several tests, one of my pupils actually once said to one of them 'get yourself a decent instructor like mine and you will pass first time like me'.

Your instructor should have given you plenty practise at all manoeuvres especially the left reverse as you failed that on your last test, if he thinks you are 'just not ready' he should not be putting you in for a test, TBH he does not exactly sound like a good instructor at this stage before a test he should be building up your confidence for the test.

Only you can make the decision as to whether to cancel but with only seven minors on your last test you are really at test standard, it may be worth considering changing to another instructor.

You're paying your instructor per hour to teach you how to drive and the end result of which being passing your driving test.

If the one thing holding you back is reversing around a corner then you need to tell her that you feel you need to practise this - it's a lot of hassle finding another instructor at this stage IMO so I'd just talk to your existing instructor first and tell them you want to practise that before test or you'll be looking elsewhere...
  • Honestly, I was the same. Failed my test first time and instructor told me I had the ability to pass, so there would be no point in having frequent lessons (a waste of money).
Motorbike instructor talked me out of Direct Access as well (lump sum for 5 days training and test) and instead had 4 lessons, failed, done another 2 and passed. (foot down on u-turn, common fail i think).
Wife sat hers 4 times. On the 4th attempt, she took an over the counter thing called Calms. She passed, might be a lot of rubbish, but if you feel nervous, give it a go.

Agreed, ditch (presumably) him asap!

Is there someone else who can take you out for some practice? It is a pity if you didn't get any practice in over the last 4 days. It's a statement of the obvious, but I would suggest you focus on correcting the faults, and be esp mindful of the major.

It is not an unknown tactic for instructors to suggest that you take additional lessons in the run up to the test, not to help you in particular, but as an income protection strategy. getting rid of mine was the best thing I could have ever done.

If you fail because "you're just not ready" then your instructor should not be letting you book a test!

As you are the one paying for the lessons and the test(s) – none of which come cheap – I would cancel the test (which can be done using the link below), and find a new instructor!

I struggled with that same manoeuvre, probably due to lack of practice – my instructor only introduced it two lessons before my test (!) and needless to say it came up, and I screwed it up! Even after I failed the test, he never incorporated that manoeuvre into my lessons so I changed instructors, and it was the best thing I ever did. I've now had my licence for just over two years. :)

I had 5 weeks between my 1st and 2nd test and didn't drive once in that time. Went on to pass my 2nd test easilly. If you are ready, you will pass. I'd be reluctant to change instructor personally. Your instructor knows you now and you may justfindit nervewracking to get used to a new instructor now.

I sucked at the left reverse when learning and practised it all the time - didn't get asked to do it in my test :rotfl:
