You do get hats that don't stretch, mostly they kinda just sit on the head till they get a bit bigger and they sprackle about so much that hats just fall off anyway (or thats what mine did!). You can also buy jersey sheets ;)

Or a tiny bit of elastic sewn into the back?

Thanks for the comments about the WI, it does sound interesting and there are loads of skills I'd like to learn. I'm going to have a look at their website I think.

I would keep it quiet if I did join though, I think the stick I'd get might put me off. I'm 36 though, so old enough to laugh it off...

I've just cut this out http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2007/11/quilt-long-week-1.html ready to start sewing. I'm using an old duvet cover of DD's for the first block. It's a pink print one side and pink gingham the other. It's poly cotton so I'll get poly cotton for the backing too (and that's cheaper- yay!).
Anyone fancy joining me in this quilt along? I know it's way behind the other ladies/ gents who've done this but it's there so it'd be rude not to! I'll try to get it sewn together before Sunday but it might not happen until Monday/Tuesday.
    I'm quite excited :D

Good luck, I look forward to seeing how you get on in the coming weeks!!

I'm only using materials which were going in the charity bag like old quilt covers at the moment. I may have to nip to a charity shop for a little more variety soon but I will only get stuff from their sale rails if I do. That's why I chose to start with this one because the duvet cover I have now is pink gingham one side and a pink with other colour pattern on the other. Another duvet cover I have is blue stripes. There is another green jungle young childs one but I'm not sure if that would go.
Do you have any old bedding or anything you could use?
I'm going stalking shortly to see if I can find the PP who wanted to make a quilt. Hopefully they'll join me :D.

I sent a message to my local WI to enquire about joining. I've roped a work friend in. I did have to ring her after the initial text to check she knew I meant the women's institute and she said she had had visions of us sniggering in the back row singing Jerusalem :rotfl:.

    Hi

I wanted a little advice from you lovely ladies. I brought a sewing machine last year with the intention of making lots of things. Lol in reality all I managed was a cushion! I wanted to make things for the house and as gifts but haven't a clue where to start, I can just manage a simple running stitch!! I like the look of quilting but is this too hard for a complete beginer?
    Thanks x

Publicly named and shamed and gauntlet thrown down :rotfl:, I have PM'd you but just in case you don't get PM's, I invite you to a quilt along :D.
http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2007/11/quilt-long-week-1.html this one. I've started this afternoon.
Anyone else up for the challenge?

    Dear Sewing Room,

Apologies if anyone else has posted this question but I hope you can help. I need at least three pairs of curtains for a house I'm moving into. A quick look around the shops shows me curtains are stupidly expensive and there's never anything in my local charity shops.
I was hoping to make some myself but wondered
    a) is it a bit ambitious for someone who doesn't have a sewing machine and hasn't sewn since school (cough*) 15 years ago?
    b) is there a really simple pattern I can use?

My little sis has a machine but it would be too awkward to pick up from where she lives, so I'll either have to invest in a machine or hand-sew - not something I'm good at. Any ideas for a sewing simpleton?

ISOM you are right hun! ;) Kaz Id love to but I dont have any fabric yet (still waiting on Sherbet Pips hitting the shops and its not due for another 5 weeks. :( ) Ive now set my heart on it!
Id like to make a quilt thats big enough for my bed but Im confused about how you know how much fabric to buy. Could I still do a quilt along if I plan on making a bigger quilt than the one thats being "a-longed"? I dont think a small one would look right on a bigger bed. I always over think things TBH so Im probably just being daft.

Loving the chat about the W.I. We are planning on moving out of Edinburgh shortly to a smaller town, one of which has a W.I and I reckon Id definately be up for joining (Might be a bit daunting though as Im a bit shy unless im around people I know..(and then Im a bit loud.) x

Edit: Click, sorry just read your post. You would probably be better with a machine but you could hand sew if you wanted. This might help you although someone else who has made them might be best placed to give you direct advice. Ive not attempted curtains yet. x

I am about to embark on quilt shortly so may join you. However, I'm off on holiday tomorrow for 10 days then only back 3 days before I go away for another week. Nothing too exciting camping the first one and in a caravan the second.

When I'm back with a bit of time I will start my quilt so may be a few weeks behind the rest of you lovely ladies (sorry and gents if there are any out there!!).
