I collected my stencils today. I'm a little bit :( because I seem to have misunderstood the website. I thought it said that all pieces (except the 12.5 inch square) came with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Hence I thought that I would be right with the size of curved piece I got. Unfortunately, none of the squares have a seam allowance drawn on them. So, when I make the curlicue quilt, I will have to figure out some way of getting a 3.5 inch square. Bothersome :(. I will probably just use my metal ruler to cut the fabric into strips 3.5 wide and then again into 3.5 inch squares. Not sure yet.
Want to get into town to the fabric shop tomorrow to see if I am lucky enough to find cheap fat quarter bundles. My sister bought some locally to her for £3.99 for 4 fat quarters. So (IIRC) she's paid £3.99 per yard of fabric. That's pretty decent isn't it?
Hopefully I'll be able to find some nice pale fabric to use as background fabric and it won't be too steep.
I've got a rabbit in the slow cooker ready for tomorrows tea so I don't even need to be hands on at tea time- yay!

Hi Hmo, the pattern I used is McCalls m4762, it goes from age 7 to age 12 so should be fine for what you want. It was quite easy to do if you follow the instruction sheet to the letter. On the first top I didn't read it all and made the job harder than it should have been. The other two tops I made were much easier. I will put a pic of the other set on my blog tomorrow morning. You get two versions of the top, one with buttons up the back to do it up and one with elastic. I did the elastic version. The shorts were dead easy to make, also you could make capri pants but I just did the shorts as her birthday is August so hopefully nice and sunny weather by then.

hi thanks ive just done a quick google for the pattern it looks nice, but dont know if i could make them, but would like to try something simple.

are they other two tops you mention from the same pattern or another one.

i will have to show my dd and then try and get some fabric to have a go, will you post when you have posted the photos so i can look please.

    thanks

I made my wedding dress and the girls 3 bridesmaids dresses about 8 years ago, and that was on the bed! But I did put down a board under the fabric, and kept moving it around so as not to cut the bedding!.:D

Ooh, I just went to press the go advanced, and page end and realised after all these years that there are othe options and all the last posts are reversed! that gave me a scrolled snap shot of all the lovely pictures. May have to try that again in future!.:rotfl:

    Well done Nykied :T
I am now in the process of cutting squares for my shabby chic patchwork quilt (pic's of fabric on my homepage) I have to move it though as I have had the date for my left hand operation :o I have till the 10th of May.
I brought a very big cutting board a while back it is like yours hmo :D and covers my desk. I also have 4 smaller ones, they were my friend who passed away last year, she did the most beautiful quilts and her husband said I could have her stuff. She had started a quilt before getting ill so Im going to finish it for him so he has something of her's (she gave all her quilts to family and he does not have one).
It will be a challenge as it's a reversible quilt, I just have to put all the padded squares together.
I will get a pic on here later so you can see it :D
Getting myself sorted 1 day/1thing at a time :) and Love sewing :)

I have all three sets on my blog now Hmo, the skirt isnt from the pattern, I made that up myself (the butterfly skirt) but the tops and shorts are from the pattern. I noticed last night that there is a pattern for a straight skirt included in the packet as well as top, shorts and longer pants xx

£3.99 is a brilliant price for four fat quarters. Wish I lived near her. I am off to my favourite fabric shop tonight, the woman is having a "do" there for regular customers. Hoping I might be able to get the rest of the bits I need to make a quilt for my Dad. Need to get about 4 fat quarters and then 1 1/2 metres of something to go with it. Going to do a 9 square block sort of but with six squares and then a strip instead of the other three squares if you know what I mean going across the top of the block. The middle square of each block will be embroidered with a member of our family's name on it.

12 fat quaters is more than enough for a quilt top - that is 3m of fabric. I know that you will be chopping it up, but it is plenty. You can always add a border or two if t is not quite big enough.

I am bit of a lazy crafter so always find the quickest way. All my quilts have been made by strip-piecing or chain piecing.

Strip piecing, you cut the fabric into strips desired size (so yours would be 51/2inches) then sew pairs of strips together, press seams to one side (darkest fabric) Then sew pairs of strips together with seams facing different directions to reduce bulk. Then cut into rows & sew rows together. Much quicker than sewing squares together.

If you do decide to do the square thing, feed the pairs of squares through the machine, one after teh other without breaking the thread in between pairs. saves time & thread. That is chain piecing.

If you google you will find lots of tutorials for both methods

Might have a go at the strip method, anything for speed. It's only going to be for me so if it goes slightly swiffy then only I will know :rotfl:

Had a go at a bag yesterday with a piece of material I have had for nearly 13 years. I even lined it and put in 2 pockets. Can't believe how easy it was and really pleased with how it turned out. Thinking of who would like a bag for birthday or Christmas now.

    Hi guys,

I am way behind on here i haven't chance to cvome on for weeks so have lots to ctach up on and lots of pics to put on. I'll get round to that but first i am after some advice please. I am losing the will to live with my sewing machine!!. It is a Brother BC-2100 computerised machine and i have had it 5 months. It has just started skipping random topstiches. It will sew a fair amount of stitches and then for no reason (i'm sure thereis one i just don't know what it is!) it will skip a stitch or sometimes a few then carry on normally. When i say skip the needle is performing the movement correctly (so not jumping)but the thread isn't leaving the stitch in the fabric if that makes sense!!. I have tried reloading thread and bobins changing thread and bobbin, turning machine off changing fabric and changing the needle and i still can't sort it. I am in the middle of something so don't want to have to send it off to Brother evenb though it is still quite new. Please please please can anyone help

    Thanks....
