The Sewing Room

Hi there, do you mind if I jump in with you guys? DH bought me a sewing machine must be 12 years ago now and up until recently I'd hardly used it. In August I went on a sewing course and made a bag, then I made a summer dress and now I'm just working on a cord pinafore for myself. I'm really enjoying it and am learning so much!
You are all making beautiful things and I thought it would be nice for me to join in here, get to know you and share ideas/questions and maybe, if I'm brave, post a few pictures at some point!
I had a rush of blood to my head the other week and bought a Janome overlocker (my sewing machine is Janome and I love it) - plucking up the courage to try unthreading it and rethreading it with the aid of a Craftsy course I got half price. Wish me luck!!!
See you soon
Hi and welcome, look forward to seeing some of your makes. you will be fine with the overlocker just thread it up in the order it tells you to.
also a tip i was given is once its all threaded hold onto all the 4 threads and then pull back each one in turn at the first position ontop if thats makes sense whilst still holding all the 4 in the other hand its supposed to make sure all the individual threads are sat in the tensions properly. it works for me every time.0 -
Is she a peg doll? My mum has made quite a few for my children and they're lovely. My youngest daughter has a prince and a princess, a fairy and a mermaid
My eldest daughter has a couple too, and she even made my son a copy of his nutcracker (when he was little he loved watching Barbie and the Nutcracker - well the swordfight parts anyway :rotfl:. I found a wooden nutcracker in a shop for him and he wouldn't be parted from it, he even slept with it!)
No, she isn't a peg doll. You should put a photo up so we can see all your peggies, bet they are well loved, especially as your mum made them.:)0 -
Hi
Does anyone know if John Lewis have fabric sales at this time of year?
I'm looking to buy 15m of curtain fabric but at £25m, the thought is hurting quite a bit.
Many thanks0 -

Sorry I don't know the answer. Could you look on their webpage it might have it their? £25 is a bit ouch! Have you tried E"ay see if they have either curtains or material a bit cheaper?0 -
I bought 3m of lovely soft Royal Stewart tartan fabric with a view to making something Christmassy. I also considered making some pj bottoms for my grandsons but they have just had new ones from JoJoMaman Bebe so don't need them really. There is enough for a tablecloth but the fabric is not the right kind, too soft.
I am loathe to cut into it but can't think of anything big to make. Any suggestions welcome.0 -
How about Xmas sacks or stockings? You could applique different things onto it like Santa etc or you could make a table runner? I made a skirt with my tartan fabric yesterday and I'm using the leftovers to make heart shapes to applique onto cushions.14 projects in 2014: 3/140

Could you edge it and make it into a light throw/blanket for the sofa? Or: Christmas tree 'skirt', tartan bunting (good for New Year too), stockings, sacks, wall hanging advent of some kind. Cushion covers.

is the fabric sold under their own name or does it have a manufacturer on it if so do a google and you may find it cheaper elsewhere on the net0 -
I've not had a chance to take photos but this weekend I finally got round to making a floor cushion from 2 pillows and a carrier bag holder from old pj bottoms.
I've done a fair bit of clothes sewing in the last 6 months but haven't got round to posting about them. I'm gradually getting better but still feeling very much a newbie.2019 fashion on a ration 0/66 coupons0
