Those of you that sew to sell - is it worth it??? I know quite a few of you now have "shops"
I keep having people telling me that I should sell the things that I make, but up till now I have been making purely for my own sake. I don't know if I coud sell the items for enough money to cover my time & materials and this is my hobby - I want it to still be fun, not a chore.
If I was to sell then I would want to make enough to make it worth my while - not a tenner here & there IYGWIM?
I am just thinking about all my options whilst I am not working. DH can charge £20 minimum for an hours work fixing peoples cars (although frustratingly he only ever charges for parts plus "a drink") but an hours sewing doesnt generate that kind of money does it?

Have to agree with you Tamster. I'm in a similar situation as OH was made redundant (again) just before Christmas and the job market is dead.
As you say though, the time involved to make maybe £10 is just ridiculous. Only good side is that it keeps you occupied I suppose.Jack of all trades ... Master of none

I make things for my shop tamster as I dont go out to work so it gives me something to do. I have been selling on average just one item a month since I opened the shop but then I am not that impressed really with the way Folksy has been going lately. A lot of people on their forum are moaning as they changed the site just in the run up to Christmas when people were expecting their biggest sale period, plus the search on there and the way they categorise things are a bit awkward. For example, I have made some cushions which I think would be more suitable for a bedroom but you can only put cushions on under the Living Room category.
Mooloo, did you have a pattern for the bag made from mens ties? I have a big box full of ties that my OH has been chucking out over the last few years. I wanted to make a bag out of them to sell but not sure how to sew them up or anything lol.0 -
Here is one of my new cushions0

I posted this on another part of the board, looking for advice on a sewing machine, but I guess you sewing experts are all on here!
Basically, I'd like to get me daughter, soon to be 11 a sewing machine for her birthday. I haven't a clue on what to get her? Any help appreciated. Thanks in advanceMSE Forum's favourite nutter :T0 -
Lovely cushions rufus.
It's been so long since I've had the machine out, I think I'm getting withdrawal symptoms! I have bought a lovely huge oak unit with a glazed door for all my notions and things. I'm starting to get it all organised - I shall post a pic when I have."A cat can have kittens in the oven, but that don't make them biscuits." - Mary Cooper

I totally agree, and think it would just be too much of a chore and take the joy away from my hobby. Having said that I am now building up quite a collection of quilts and I am running out of room so may try and sell some of the new ones I make towards the end of this year.Tamster150 wrote: »Those of you that sew to sell - is it worth it???
