Finished my new website just in time before my first farmers market this weekend! It's a bit thrown together but I should be able to re-work some of it before Sunday if I've got any time inbetween making/icing cakes.
all opinions & suggestions for improvement welcome!

Hi Esmer

No, I started with EHO first. And they basically said no! Nothing to do with my hygiene, they done encourage cooking business from homeI would have to get my kitchen up to their strict regulation

Thanks for the info Cookie, it makes a visit by the EHO seem a lot less intimidating than I thought it would be.0

Well Esmer they can't actually refuse registration.......sometimes I wish we could! So I would just go ahead and register!! The worse they can do is maybe servce notice to make you install whb if you havent got one....but you could defo argue it. We have hundreds and hundreds of home caterers....... I bet they have loads of child minders in the district that are food regsitered without being'up to strict regulation'0

Hiya,
Is it the same in Scotland as it is down south? I know what you mean about childminders, I knew one and put it this way I wouldnt let my daughter sit in her kids highchair when we visited her house....... im sure it was growing its own new disease.......
I dont want to do something wrong and end up paying the price for it later, if you know what I mean. My plan was to have EHO signed off, do my hygiene certificate and get insurance. I work nearly fulltime, but it was something I was going to do for a hobby to start with.
Thanks for your advice, its much appreciated.

Hi Esmer
The regs are slightly different in Scotland (temps etc) but not for registration. The thing is, they can't refuse yoiu registration, if you just send form in..your registered and thats that. They will have to give you 24 hours notice before they visit you, but if they are as understaffed as we are it may not be for a while!! As far as 'paying the price' goes
, if they kick up a fuss about wash hand basins etc (and IMO they shouldnt if its just cakes etc) then you just stop...and you havent lost anything. Here is a link to a really good advice leaflet that ,igth help you...and its specific to Scotland too

I hope it helps, and I think you should go for it if you want to x0 -
Hello everyone!
Hope you don't mind me jumping in here!
I got into cake decorating after making my son's 1st birthday cake. I discoverd how much i enjoyed it and that i was actually quite good at it. Since then i have made birthday cakes for family and friends and recently made my son's 2nd birthday cake. I have got into the habit of making a cake for the girls in my team at work whenever its one of their birthdays and they always marvel over it. Friends and relatives have told me that i should go into business as i'm so good (although they are obviously biased) but whenever i thought about it i decided there wasn't enough money to be made and that with being a Mum and working 3 days a week in a stressful job, i just wouldn't have the time. However, last week i took a cake into work for a colleague and my boss was so impressed she practically dragged everyone from the whole centre in to have a look! This then generated 3 orders from colleagues. 1 halloween cake and 2 birthday cakes. So it has kind of evolved by itself and i am now thinking of giving it a go.
I have literally just sat here for hours reading this whole thread and am not even sure i would pass the EHO inspection. I live in a small rented house with a tiny kitchen, not much storage space, 1 sink, a cat, a child, a washing machine, etc. I just can't see it being passed. I have thought about maybe using my parents house which is very close by but i'm not even sure this would be possible?!
I have a friend of a friend making up a logo for me and i then intend to get business cards and a photo book made up.
I'm a bit worried about making these 3 cake orders from colleagues as they will be paying me for them (although very little more than the cost of ingredients and supplies) and i obviously haven't done any of the official stuff yet! Eek!
Ooh quick question too. How do you get your cupcakes to hold their shapes so well? is it to do with the cases you use or the bun tray? The cupcakes i make usually splay out quite a lot ifkwim and this doesn't look very neat or proffesional.
Will see if i can post some links or photos of some of my cakes.
Thanks in advance! Look forward to chatting with you all a bit more!I'm FINALLY debt free! DFW Long Hauler #227LBM - Jan 2006  March 2006 -£26,725  Apr 2015 - £0!!! :jBaby boy born 1/8/08 Baby girl born 28/6/120 -
