Have been busy this evening practising some valentine cupcakes - my hubby has been busy taking some good photos for me, really pleased with them! Hopefully they will help bring in some orders!

I managed to finish the birthday cake order last week (it's the one with the model house). Turns out I completely undercharged for it but it's a good one to add to the portfolio, and good experience to have.

I also managed to bake a few extra cakes and cupcakes as my lovely brother, who's a great photographer, was coming over. I had to rush to get some of them finished so I know they aren't perfect, but would be grateful of any comments/suggestions as I'm very new to this (that collection of about 5 cakes is all I've ever done!! :o)

I've got a family Christening cake to do in a couple of weeks, which will be good practice, too.

I've found friends and family are being so generous with their time. I have volunteers to help with branding, marketing, and web design, so am a very lucky lady indeed!

Can I ask, is anyone here employed by a company and registered as self-employed for their baking business? I'm a little confused by it all!

I hope you're all busy and enjoying you're baking ;)

Does anybody ever make number tin cakes? I have a 16th order for monday (last minute!!) and I haven't a clue how much mixture to use. I can't do the measuring thing because i'm hiring them on Saturday and I need to price it up asap!

    Thanks xx

I have my first order with numbers for this Friday. I wanted to rent the number tins but they were veeery small (maybe 40 portions) and I need 70 portions. So I ended up baking a big sheet of 40x30 cm. I'll cut a 7 and a 0 from that
So instead of renting a tin, at 3.50 each you can carve them yourself. It's much easier to measure ingredients.

How simple/difficult is the design? Arpoximate how many hours you'll need to bake and decorate the cakes x £X/hour + materials and you'll have the price.
As an idea I've seen someone charging £35 per number in my area.
I'll tell you tomorrow evening how much time I've spent decorating them.

  • That's so pretty esmer :)

By the way, I received my EHO docs a while ago and the accompanying letter said they they couldn't refuse registration. I thought of you when I read that as I know you had some trouble. It was from Hart. If you want the wording/more info, let me know

My council say no way! They wouldn't do anything if I just do family and friends. Which is fine as my own job has went so busy. Would not have the time. Thanks for thinking of me ;)

  • Hi HelenPie, I work part time & I am also starting a cake baking business! I have had the all clear from EHO & will be insured by SCG. I already have to complete a tax return every year so all I need to to do is give the tax man a call to let them know what I'm doing. I do my tax return online, it's quite straight forward.

    esmer your cupcakes look lovely.:)

I'm still trying to figure out how to put photos on here. I would love to share my creations with you all!:)
