Today was the day i had to make the 40th / 50th / 60th birthday cake and cupcakes for. It took forever! But i am so pleased with it! I got soooo many amazing comments from people and actually got 5!! more orders today!
The main cake is chocolate fudge cake and the cupcakes are raspberry and white choc, marshmallow and vanilla, coffee and walnut, and luscious lemon.

    Hi everyone
Started my cake decoration course on Monday, so excited! I really want to do cake decoration as a career and have my own business. I started reading this thread a while back but lost track so going to have to catch up on it at some point.
Does anyone know where I can get a cheap but decent free standing mixer? I have seen one for £108 plus £8 p&p down from £199. I know I'm probably not going to get any cheaper, but just thought I would ask just in case. I have an electric hand mixer but my tutor said to make royal icing without a standing mixer you need to whisk by hand for 15mins then use an electric hand whisk for 5mins or the motor will run out, so at some point it's really going to be better to get a free standing mixer!
Also, to run a business I know I need to be passed by health and safety and I need to register as self employed (already registered for mystery shops so that's sorted) I am doing a rubix cube cake for a friends suprise party this year and I will either charge her just the cost for the ingredients or I will so it as a present, so I'm not making profit or I know I could get into trouble. If I was to get any orders off the back of it, can I just charge the cost of ingredients and use it as practice, or would I get into trouble for that?

  • Babyplum your cake looks amazing, I love it!

Busy weekend for me coming up, I've got a fair few Valentine's Day orders (although perhaps not quite as many as I was hoping for) but the good news is they're quite spread out rather than just in my local area so hopefully that means word is spreading. I've found Facebook is a great way of advertising - there's lots of local 'for sale' groups about at the moment.

If anyone would like to see some more Valentine's photos there's lots on my Facebook page (link in my profile) There's also a link on Facebook to my new website as well - I've been slaving over it the last few weeks so would love to hear what you all think!

Cakelover keep an eye on freecycle-I posted a wanted 3 years ago and got a kenwood major. As for making RI-I dont want to undermine what your tutor is telling you,but I regularly make RI with my little cookworks £7 special (dont make big enough quants to use the kenwood. And most of us wait to get to class to do it-is she having you make it using eggs or merriwhite? Because truthfully when making RI for consumption you shouldnt be using egg as it doesn't get cooked.

I think this is only a concern in certain people, like pregnant, young children, elderly? I've always eaten royal icing with egg whites and it's never done me any harm ;)

I don't use it now in my royal icing because the royal icing sugar is easier and i'm lazy. :rotfl: :p
