Do I need to report this accident?

I accidently reversed into a car tonight.

Spoke to the driver of the other car and he was happy that there was no damage to his car and he drove off - we didn't even exchange details.

So do I need to inform my insurers? I'm concerned that he will decide at some point in the future that there was damage and if I don't mention it to my insurers it will come back to bite me on the bum

  • I would. I've had a similar thing happen to me (although the other person hit me), and I still informed them even though I couldn't be bothered to do anything about it.

Made no difference to my premium.
  • Thanks for the advice - though I have to admit that was my gut reaction as well.

  • Some !!!!!! reversed into my car a while ago while I was parked at the chippy on a Friday night.

He proceeded to drive off, so I flew after him banging on his windows til the old sod stopped!

There wasnt any damage, but its the principle...!

Do not mention it to your insurers if you have reached the agreement that you have with the other driver. If you do reveal it you will have to declare the fact every time you get a motor insurance quote and you may find that your premium will be affected as a result.

Years ago my car skidded on compounded ice and it ran into a lampost. It was third party insured only so I could not claim for the damage to it which was extensive. I threw the car in the bin and told the insurers that it had been sold. That was the end of it.

Yes, because strangers always honour agreements and never go back on their word.

Until the now weakened lampost fell onto someone elses car. Steve, this accident by rights SHOULD have been reported as damage to other property occured.

To the OP, no need to report it. If you do then it will be held as an open claim until time barred, this will affect your premium. Details were exhanged and a course of action agreed, ie no further action.
  • Even if the other guy tries to claim, the insurer will claim that it hasn't been reported and can do nothing until it is. The other driver will then have to pursue the claim alone through the courts. Being no damage to his car, he would have no chance anyway. Don't bother reporting it, it won't get you anywhere.
  • Yes, the lamp post one should have been reported. The 'owner' of the lamp post, if they perceive crash damage, can pursue you for the money after the event. Of course they need your reg number to do that though.
