I hate it when these bus drivers do this with the weather just to save driving a couple of miles:mad: :rotfl:

You say the weather was not below freezing, however you don't say what the forcast was. Was this a morning bus? Black ice doesnt melt instantly.

The driver (and by default the bus company) deemed it unsafe to travel, seeing as he is a qualified driver and I assume neither your father or you are, then your gonna have to trust him on this one. However the good news is you are entitled to a refund of the fare that you paid;)

Daz, check if the route concerned is run as a commercial concern or is under contract to a local authority.
If it is a commercial concern you have few rights, however the local authority may be prepared to help.
In the circumstances you describe, I reckon you have little hope however. You appear to live in a rural area and it's fair to assume that road gritting hasn't been 100% this year and safety has to be paramount.

I think buses being cancelled/late are poor excuses for being late for work etc.

You often don't know the bus is going to be late until you are at the stop and the bus isn't. it's the same with them being cancelled, you often don't know until you are at the stop and the bus is late.

If in doubt leave the house earlier !

What if you get the first bus in the morning, leaving the house earlier is not going to help!

What if you don't have any doubt? What happens if it is a perfectly normal day, no bad weather, road works or anything to give an indication that the bus will be late, or cancelled. But the bus turns up 45 minutes late because of an admin error at the depot?

Happened to my bus once, the 7.05 turned up at 7.50 and the driver said "Sorry, I was allocated the 7.05 but the admin wrote 8.05 on my worksheet, so I've been sitting in the canteen eating bacon sarnies while you have been standing here waiting for me".

Other options of transport are not available. Before April 2009 we had 2 buses every week on a tuesday. Now we have 3 buses a day. And the last one is only a return from town, not into town and is at 4:40pm from town, which is too early to catch from work (we were finishing work at 4pm this day). And the nearest train station is over 2 miles away and is a request stop with trains every 2 hours also.

Three busses per day, the last one too early for you to get home from work How do you normally get to and from work?

which meant that the driver probably did what he has done before and just couldnt be bothered to go the rest of the way to turn round about 4 miles away where there are hardly any customers.

What do you normally do when the bus doesn't turn up because the driver couldn't be bothered to the rest of the way?

I start at work at 9 and I live 2 miles away from the office - last Monday I left home at 7.30 and the bus came at 8.56. I got in at 9.30.

How much earlier should I have left? 6.30? 5.30?

Car sharing wont work, me and my father live in the same house

Surely that makes it perfect for car sharing, no driving 3 miles out of your way to pick up the other person. No waiting round for them if they are late etc.

Not if neither of them have cars?

You could walk 2 miles in less than the 1.5 hours you'd allowed for the journey! (Though I realise you may have very good reasons for not wanting to do so).

Well they weren't the replies i was expecting!

People are suposing that we live in a town/city. This is not the case. We live in the country 9 miles from the nearest town.

The temperature that day was above freezing, there was no ice on the roads, traffic was flowing freely and no water except unsalted areas were frozen, but all roads into the town were salted and free from ice. The bus was running to a village 2 miles away we found out which meant that the driver probably did what he has done before and just couldnt be bothered to go the rest of the way to turn round about 4 miles away where there are hardly any customers.

A taxi is out of the question, it is £25 to town! And no, i dont work for a big company, the only people that work in the shop is me, my father and another man. It is a family business which made it important for us to get in that day as it was very busy.

I think that answers everything, i was hoping for some sort of laws which bus companies must follow and what happens when they dont, but then again its the internet! Search for bouncy balls and you dont get rubber ones!

If it's a family business, factor an emergency fund into your profit/loss account, to pay for alternative transport for any future similar eventualities.

I do normally walk, I leave at 7.30 as I like to get to work early and have breakfast, do my hair etc.

I was only getting the bus because it had snowed and the pavements were treacherous. Bus company said they were running a normal service with no delays!
