  • Has to be 25mm away from any electrics - so unsure why BG has condemned it.

If your unsure, i would ring gas safe and check if the person who laid the gas pipe under the floor is gas safe registered. If not, raise concerns with the person and say you will report him.

Its very dangerous even laying pipes for gas if you don't know what your doing. You have so many things to follow and do!
  • i asked him straight out if he was gas safe registered--he said yes--got angry

i phoned up gas safe register---they hav no name under corgi or gas safe register.

prob is i want him to finish all other work in flat but not gas if hes not registered.i will hav to get someone in--which means ripping up my new solid wood flooring.

    im foooked

  • Thing is, someone may just do a gas check and check everything is OK. I would report him anyway, as this can result in a large fine, and will deter him from working on gas again.

So many things can go wrong on gas!
  • theres about 4k of work still to be done on my flat which i hav paid for---if i get rid of him its going too cost that to get someone else in.so he gets a 1k fine---ive lost much more

Gas safe members cannot just turn up and test the gas system, as anything could have been used where you can't see ie plastic, pipes not clipped correctly, PTFE tape insted of Gas Tape etc etc.
So what happens when you do a gas service? Surely you'll be signing off the WHOLE installation when you haven't installed or even seen most of it?

    Just mildly interested.

If he was a gas fitter, he should be working to (indeed anyone should)

8.16.2 Separation of installation pipework from other services

Where installation pipes are not separated by electrical insulating material, they shall be spaced as follows: a) at least 150 mm away from electricity meters and associated excess current controls, electrical switches or sockets, distribution boards or consumer units; b) at least 25mm away from electricity supply and distribution cables.

    So 150mm from a switch.

I doubt it, it depends on how your contract for the work was worded but you probably should have checked that he was qualified or using qualified tradesmen.

IMO you can sue for the costs involved in getting the necessary certificates (ripping up floors etc) and the costs of getting the already paid for works completed if he does not complete them. It will probably get very messy both legally and physically and home insurance legal cover often specifically excludes building work disputes.
