You have to have a gas safe certificate - dont pay him till you get one.

If he isnt then he will have to pay a Gas safe engineer to inspect it and issue the certificate.

Building trade should be back on 4th January
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • big thx mckneff

ive paid him--but prob is a bit complicated--hes upgrading the whole flat and hes already laid down new solid wood flooring covering the pipework.

a real shock to system if he isnt gas/safe registered

can he just register now--or is there a process he has to go thru

Its quite normal for a builder to run pipes, put the boiler and rads in etc. The bit that that a Gas Safe Registered Engineer gas to do is actually connect it to the Gas and commission it / test it for safety.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.

As far as i know, he has to go through a training process to get a sustificate (sorry, couldnt reisist, half a glass of white and half a glass of red and my sense of humour is peaked) apart from that i'm stuffed with Christmas dinner.
But as phill99 says, he would have to get a registered gas safe engineer to inspect, sign off and issue the paperwork (see i resisted typing the s word again)

Have a loverly Christmas and remember if you have work done in the future, never, ever pay until the work is finished and yu are completely satisfied with it.

Heating Engineers (plumbers) have a professional registration
that can be revoked if you complain, destroying their livelyhood.
The responsible ones therefore prefer to do a self-contained job that they
can guarantee. They don't like to get invlved with other people's mess that may or may not be any good.

When I live in a house, I don't care about a certificate, which is just bureaucratic non-sense that you can't get out of. I care about the work is done properly. I make sure the pipes don't leak etc. before moving on to the decorations. I have a Gas Safe plumber that I would wait weeks for, rather than calling in a total stranger.

The concept of getting a builder in based on the lowest quote is pretty precarious. I have a builder who is not very good, but is happy to work with me and experiment where needed, not haggling over every little thing.

Does moneysavingexpert.com do a list of tradespeople?
Or a list of good "Find a tradesmen" sites?

it is not a question of cost here Pincher it is a safety issue as if he is installing a central heating system the op needs to know that system is safe and not likely to 1. break down, 2. blow up. 3 leak gas or water. 4 leak co which can be deadly - and there is no price you can put on peace of mind or your safety.

I'm saying if the OP's builder isn't qualified, then he may have problems getting a plumber who doesn't know the builder, and won't takeover where the builder left off. If he needs to get a separate plumber, he needs to work out where the demarcation is.

The builder probably has a regular Gas Safe plumber that he calls in for the critical stuff. If not, it gets tricky.
