I would have suggested acrylic if you hadn't already tried it, maybe it depends on how porous the wood is, but not my area.

I'm going to attempt making quirky button sets for sil, she loves knitting but always complains about the buttons for sale near her. I found a tutorial on this blog angeleden.blogspot.com (I posted about it the other day as they have a giveaway too at the moment.

Anyone know any good sites with sewing tutorials on? I want to sew some gifts, but I would rather download a free pattern than buy one and use it once. They have to be simple though, I'm new to sewing or crafting in general really.

    Hi savery and AJ fan,

AJfan, I`m not sure about writing, try the making cards forum, on here, they seem to know lots of answers to things.

Savery, it depends what you want to sew really, theres so many sites out there, but they have a sewing thread on here also and they`re great.

And mary as regards your gloves what are they made of? Is it wool cant you sew on some beads like little tassels or something, i`m rubbish at sewing

susan - they're just plain woolen gloves.........haven't got any more beads left now I've done mobile phone charms but thought among mums buttons there might be some I can do something with........I'm trying to aim for a cheap and cheerful christmas so if I can use whats sitting around instead of buying then all the better.

Going to have a go at making a door hanger our of a bit of tablecloth I've got lurking in a drawer -not for christmas -just to cover up a door that hasn't stripped well at all..........just needs something to liven it up. I don't want to paint it other than colour wash so the marks will still show through.
Make a change from christmassy things for a bit:)
I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !

Now they're thinned out of the piles of plates and other stuff and I can see whats what.............and they're clean !!:T

Still thinking about what to put on these blessed gloves...........found three yellow buttons -not enough really..............have to empty the button box again I think.......;)

susan - suppose it is really............anyway, door hanger is now hanging on the door and have to say it looks good !:)
Gloves are now done.........found some flowers I used for scrapbooks and stuck them on with a yellow button stitched in the middle of the flower -another pressie done for someone -not sure who yet but its now in the spare room with all the rest.
Sorted through sons shoe box of music related stuff to make sure I'd got it all..........spent ages looking for the black ribbon I'd bought to tie it up ! Found it -still in the little white paper bag ! No wonder I couldn't see it ! Filled his girlfriends shoe box up with bath-time type stuff...........shaun the sheep bath thing, gravy tub turned into a pamper pot of freebies, foot massage stuff and bath oil...........need some aromatherapy candles now just to fill a few gaps and turn it into a proper 'relaxation' type theme.

Crikey - I even got the duster and polish out....................lol:rotfl:

hi everyone, may have posted a long time ago. Always plan to start earlier than this but in truth the summer hols are when my planning really starts, have the added incentive this year of baby number 3 being due at end of oct- so really want everything done by then. Have a few bits collected already- like cones to fill and a few blank canvas' but thats as far as I have got. Christmas on tight budget this year. Have cone ideas for adults and snowman soups to make, any ideas for babies and smaller children? Thanks
