Anybody got any tips to get Caitlyn to stay on her back for a nappy change? As soon as you lie her down she starts acting like you're torturing her... As soon as the old nappy is off and you start with the clean one she's rolling over and wailing like a banshee... Makes it very difficult to put the washables on when I'm using a nappy nippa!!

Tying them down is frowned upon now isn't it? :rotfl: No idea Krystal, I usually end up having to either play a game or just chase them. DS2 still does it now, think it's just in the manual they all get 'must wriggle as much as possible during nappy changes, must vomit down mums chest at least once, must paint the carpet with food/paint/poo....'

Beenie, give the number in my signature a call hun, they'll talk you through how everything should look... Might be a bit easier for you to explain to someone over the phone? Otherwise I can pm you but just need to take the smallest of all pickles to bed...

Krystal, I'm using this one at the moment: http://www.thenappylady.co.uk/public/articledetails.aspx?id=146

I tried the newborn fold, but it was soooo bulky it was making him incredibly bow-legged! I just worried at what such bulkiness would do long term to his hip joints. If you've got tips on making the newborn fold less bulky or another fold for wee babies, I'm all ears!

oh also, I'm totally struggling with reusable wipes. How do you wet them - like what sort of container? do you wet a bunch at once and use them over the next few days, or 1 at a time or what? we had been using a spray bottle to wet 1 at a time but they seem to be chafing his bum that way...
Snap http://www.cumbriarealnappycampaign.org/how/folds/newbornfold.asp lol... Although I used to fold the middle bit into 3 rather than 2...

My washable wipes are in a clip lock box, i put about 2cm of water and some lavender and camomile essential oil in and then just stick the wipes in and the water soaks through them all... Then I just use them as I need them :)

Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

    Mega post coming up...
how is everyone else?? ooo and life insurance this may sound like a stupid question but is it worth it?? x

i dont understand all everytime ive looked in to it it confuses me more x
I guess it depends on your financial situation. We got life insurance for both of us so that if OH died, I would have enough money to pay of the mortgage (would have been to buy a house initially but now we have one it would pay off the mortgage) and provide enough to live on for me and any children we had. If I died, it would be the same as OH would give up work to stay at home with the child(ren). If you don't have life insurance and one of you dies then the other is left either having to live on benefits or to earn enough money to live on and to put the children in childcare while they are working. We got it for 20 years and it costs £6.21/month for me and £10.45/month for OH so it doesn't cost megabucks and I read recently on "lovemoney" (used to be the Motley Fool) that life insurance premiums are fairly low at the moment. (They were recommending that people who already had it should check if they could get it cheaper.)
and for life insurance if i die me and philip are not married but of course i would like it to go to him and the kids .. would i be able to do that x
It may depend who you go with but we were given trust forms where we named who the money was to go to. (IIRC having it go into a trust means it doesn't form part of your estate which means the recipients get it more quickly.) I don't think there was anything to say you couldn't choose an unmarried partner. I did mine online and by post but I'm sure if you rang companies up they'd be able to tell you what you are able to do.

    Been reading up on weaning...
    gosh it sounds so hard.
I recommend baby led weaning. Weaning was pretty much a non event in our household because that's what we did. What I did was cook and freeze a load of sticks of veg (e.g. carrot, swede, parsnip) and then if we were having something which was unsuitable or didn't contain big lumps we could give to Alice, we would just microwave a stick or two of veg. I also used to sometimes give her a stick of bread soaked in what we were having (e.g. if it was spaghetti bolognaise) but I make sourdough bread which is more dense and therefore doesn't go all soggy and fall apart. We kept a food diary for the first few months so if you wanted I could give you a more detailed list of what sort of things we did.

    Hi Susan,

yes, I've tried this: I don't seem to be able to express much at all no matter what time of day it is. I used to be able to express quite a bit when she was first born, but not anymore! Thanks for the suggestion though :)
    Other suggestions:
    • have a hot drink while expressing
    • massage breasts at the same time (I think it might be called "breast compression")
    • look at pictures of baby while expressing
susan can you help me on what you did on your will please? x
Will PM you but will prob be Monday - if I don't PM you on Monday, send me a PM to remind me.

Ooo thanks Mooki :) how is it butting in??! That's the whole point of this thread, sort of! Snakes and Ladders looks semi-near to us, what age range would you say works there?
It took me a while to work out that that wasn't some new trendy phrase I hadn't heard of. :o
    Help me please!!

1 day old and trying to breastfeed Kaden and he really isnt interested in food at all, all he wants to do is sleep, he slept last night from quarter to 11 through til quarter to 7 this morning. Has fed on and off throughout the day but for no more than 10mins at a time before he was falling asleep again.
He was the same whilst we were at the hospital and they gave him a top up feed of formula which again he didnt particularly want but he did take about an ounce of it.

I havent had a wet nappy off him all day today and im wondering whether i should give him a top up of formula

Anyone got any ideas, i want to keep persevering with the breastfeeding but im really concerned he is not getting enough due to the lack of wet nappies :o
I know you've had a few replies already but justthough I'd add to it. When Alice was born she didn't feed at all for the first 24 hours and then didn't have her second feed for another 9 hours. They were threatening to keep me in a second night as they said that after 10 (in April!) it would be too cold to take a newborn home. (I dread to think how full the hospital must be at the moment if they follow through logically!) They didn't seem to concerned about how much she fed, they just wanted to make sure that she was able to breastfeed okay. Once we were home, we woke Alice for feeds if she hadn't woken anyway so don't know how long she would have continued with large gaps although I'm fairly sure she didn't have to be woken every time.

That's the one we used too. We didn't do the enlargement adaptation though but we managed it until after Alice was only using them for night/naps at which point OH insisted we switch to (environmentally friendly) disposables.

I accidentally deleted your wipes question but I can tell you how we did it:
We had a bowl of water which we used for cotton wool dipping or for dipping a flannel if it was a small mess. (We actually had two bowls so each day we would empty the bowl and put it upside down to drain and fill the other one because otherwise they go all horrible and yucky in the bottom.) If it was an all-over-multiple-flannels-needed kind of thing then I just used to run some warm water in the baisin and throw in however many flannels I thought I needed.

Thanks Krystal what time is the helpline open til? I just called it and it said it was putting me through to someone but then i got no answer.

Been trying to feed her for the last hour or so and she's pulling off quite often as if she's not really fussed, but she's def getting milk out and isn't frustrated.

I just want her to have a feed and then sleep for longer than 20 mins! She does sometimes but that's when my DS is up for the day so i need to be up with him rather than catching up on sleep after cluster feeding all night .

I'm grumpy tired today, and was eyeing up the formula today in Boots, til i saw the price

ooo thanks for the wipes tips, Krystal & Susan. I have a Lakeland order I've been waiting on for eons that includes the perfect sized lock & lock, so hopefully can sort that out soon.

forgot to say with that nappy fold, I actually fold the middle bit 4 times to make it more slimline...it makes a fatter wadge in the middle, but it's skinnier so he's not as bow-legged IYSWIM? but maybe it's counter intuitive? I'll keep experimenting! We're still using disposables at night just until everyone gets the hang of terries.
