    Morning all :)

I don't know if I mentioned, but last night I was supposed to be going to dinner with my boss, our head of department, my sponsors and a few other people. My sponsors never made it as they were stuck in traffic and snow - so we took the students from the lab with us - five of us in black tie and our four remaining students. These meals are normally pretty complicated (multiple types of wine, finger bowls, fruit knives, port and snuff level of formal). I have over the years shyed away from this aspect of the work as I'm better in the lab than networking at the dinner table, but was actually really good fun with the group there :) I wasn't feeling too bright, so I'm happy the real dinner been rescheduled for the spring. Our HOD was joking it was a dress rehersal - I'm definately not wearing those heels in the ice again!

We have a very light dusting of snow. I'm not looking forward to driving to Kent in it. I still have Christmas shopping to do :( I don't want to go outside.

OHs estranged wife upset him yesterday again. :( She has been calling his parents too and turned up at his workplace last week. :( He says he is going to write to his solicitor today and ask him to send a letter asking her not to do this any more. :( I hate feeling helpless as I just want to wade in and defend him, but I know that it would do more harm than good. He hates conflict, so just takes the hit each time rather than answer back - and she just carries on because there is no come back from him :( The only thing I can do is offer support and listen, but it's really hard. I asked him to reverse the gender roles and then consider her behaviour and he burst into tears. :(

I have a bottle of very nice wine and two boxes of chocolates on my desk from my boss - that's really sweet :)

Right - must go and face Christmas :) have a good day all, cel x

  • Morning everyone.

Made my rum truffles last night. I can say that I can eat chcolate and rum any time of the day as I have just tasted one and it's delicious :D
Going to take the kids to the park for a run around. DS will bounce off the walls if we don't get out and I am NOT going to the shops and don't want him to spend the whole day in front of the TV. He misbehaves when he's bored so I am hoping he'll run himself into the ground and therefore be happier this afternoon.
Our little dusting of snow hasn't thawed and it's really icy. Sky is full of cloud and it's bitter cold. Looks like more snow could fall but forecast says none due
I know some of you are struggling with the weather and I hope you continue to make safe journey's but can I have a whinge at our lack of snow? I hate living in the West Mids.......it always seems to bypass us and hits north of us or to the east :o Mind you having seen on the news that so many people have died in Europe with temps of at least minus 33 degrees  perhaps we should appreciate the weather we have got.

Going to make a chocolate swiss roll this afternoon and maybe some cheese scones. No idea what's for tea tonight :o Planner says vegetable curry but haven't got a courgette although my mum offered me one yesterday so I might see if it's still on offer ;)

Please don't think I am teaching you how to suck eggs but a few tips for driving in snow:

start off in as high a gear as possible, I normally use second gear. Stops the lack of grip on slippy surface.

obviously if you are approaching a junction slow down with plenty of time to brake gently. If you do find yourself with no grip pump the brake (called cadence braking) - if your car has ABS there is no need to do this.

Going uphill stay in as high a gear as possible, going down hill go in as low a gear as possible.

Pack suitable clothing with you incase of any breakdown or getting stuck.

And if all else fails find some one with a 4 wheel drive to ferry you about :rotfl:

Zippy - awwwww cute kitty. I thought your start to the thread was lovely and upbeat. I hope you have a nice last day at work, got any waterproof mascara you can wear?

Jackie - enjoy the theatre - hope you find a train to get you to London

Penny - sorry your health has been bad. Enjoy your break away. Merry Christmas to you xx

jc - hope DD is better soon x

Curly - hope your DD is better soon too x

Redruby - well done on a moving date! Must be a weight off your mind.

maryb - don't feel too bad - it's only by making mistakes that we learn a lesson and at least next time you know what to do.

Tru - good luck to Mr Tru with his tests today xx

Hailight - my DS is the same - he's still full of mucus :o and has this annoying habit of keep clearing his throat rather loudly. This cold/flu has been lingering ages :( Hope Dtwin is over the worst soon. Have you tried lots of steam (sitting in the bathroom with a v hot bath or shower running), Vicks and Olbas oil to try and break down the congestion?

Right I'd better make a move and get the kids ready to take to the park.
Have a good day OS or not. Hugs to those that need them.

  • celyn - hugs to you. Must be hard to not be able to voice your opinion. Is she threatening when she phones his parents/turns up at work? I mean this sounds like harrassment which fortunately there are laws against this. Would it help to report her behaviour to the police?

I'm not sure you'd class it as openly threatening - it's just demanding - wanting different things all the time. Such as refusing progress with the divorce until she has sorted out her immigration issues. She also told him that if he made me sign her forms (which I can't do anyway as I've never been served) she *might* consider not going for ancillary relief (which of course she wouldn't stick to). There is nothing to fight for - its all academic.

Thanks guys - you have no idea how much I appreciate your words. I am so so tired. :) cel x

Cel, just to distract you a little from OH's situation, how much of the yarn tops did you use to make your wrap? I'm thinking of attempting to make one for myself, as it is gorgeous!

Thanks Bitsy, it's not teaching Grandmother to suck eggs at all, I didn't have a clue. I think I did cadence braking by instinct and I did manage to steer enough so that I missed an outright collision but there was so little room for manoevre with cars abandoned at the side of the road. It's an automatic so I am not sure if I can do what you said with the gears - although I normally stick it in drive I could work my way through Gears 1 to 3.

I would never have taken the car out if the forecast had said more snow (especially as we live on a 1 in 8 hill!!!)but the roads were clear when I went out. It's in the drive for the duration now!
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

((((HUGS))) Celyn :(, and some to OH as well, you both defo need some!

Redruby - So glad to hear you have a moving date, and at least a lot of packing is already done :D

    Penny_Pincher - Hope all goes well - I pm'd you.

tru - I forgot to thank you for my favourite "O Little Town of Bethlehem" the other day x

JackieO - Hope you were able to get your train and have a good day!

zippychick - What a lovely idea, the basket I mean, Maggie will love it I bet!

maryb - what a scary experience!:eek::eek: My son-in-law, who's registered blind, was nearly "taken out" by a car trying to turn a corner on the icy road yesterday - the back end of it just kept on turning and of course he couldn't see it - thankfully DD was with him.

Reverbe :santa2: Hope you will be able to have some nice times over Christmas and new Year

Purpleivy - Hope you enjoyed your birthday and that that got some of the things on your list - but if not, the Wii Fit sounds fun :snow_grin

halight - Sorry to hear about Twin One - it does sound as if it's swallowing mucus that's making her sick.

Bitsy - I know what you mean - it can be annoying having virtually no snow , especially when you love it and know the children would enjoy it. Not nice for those with too much of the stuff either, we really need a happy medium!

csarina - What a lovely bag! The recipient is a lucky girl!

Diva - Hope you're getting some rest. Thinking of you and Tris x

tired mum - Your poor friend, 2 hours to get out of the car park - i bet it didn;t take her as long as that to do the shopping. And essex-girl - we were thinking of going to Bluewater today, but perhaps not!
Not quite so icy here today, as we had a bit of snow last night but it hasn't frozen hard - i bet the pavement alongside the building where our little Co-Op is will still be an ice-rink though :( After nearly going head over tip twice y'dy I walked along to a corner where there had been some sun on the pavement, and DH picked me up there.

It's DGD's 2nd birthday today, and a trip on the special Christmas train on the Kent and E. Sussex Railway has been booked, so I hope the roads are ok and the trains are running. Her family are joining some friends when they get there, providing the friends have made it from Gravesend area!

The tree is now decorated :snow_grin:xmastree:

DS had an emergency call from his big sis yesterday to ask if he could try to sort out their computer as if was running really slowly. He went round there after work. it took him ages but it's ok now (virus problems - there's a new one that got onto their pc before their antivirus software had been updated, and that in turn had let others in). DD is very happy today as the Next sale is on and she can shop online before all the bargains are gone :snow_laug

keep safe and warm, everyone xx

    Morning all!

Bright sunshine here today, had lots more snow overnight according to the girls, I haven't actually left my bed yet so can't comment! Did work last night in my defence lol!

Roads locally are horrible, don't think salt or grit has made it's way round yet! The amount of ice is frightening, hoping the sun will get rid of some of it, not so bad when everyone is going very slowly, but there is always the odd person who thinks it's a good idea to overtake - scared me half to death yesterday!

Off today to Primarni to get girls their Christmas jammies, and they want to choose some little bits for each other. Motorway should be fine I hope! Also need to wrap a few bits and bobs - including dd1's new camcorder, she opted for that rather than an ipod in the end! Good job I reserved one as they were sold out everywhere yesterday!

OS stuff will involve the usual cooking, cleaning and trying not to make any more mess! And encouraging the kids not to make any more mess!

Hope everyone has a great day xx
