they offered me another type of credit/debt They were very irresponsable. They have used my naivety to their advantage.
Like supermarkets putting sweets by the checkout, car manufacturers draping supermodels across car bonnets at exhibitions, perfume ads implying you'll 'get the girl/boy' if you just spray some on....
As the anti-drug progamme says: "just say no"!0 -
Errr, who was?

But you have TRUST in your local bank branch to offer you the right advice rather than being influenced by the targets they have which leads to them getting money in the form of a bonus(even the high street bankworker is influenced by the £££££ sign).0 -
I agree with natweststaffmember - if someone is in a hole which they are having difficulty getting out of, surely the humane thing is to help them, not to shovel a load more whatsit on top of them?CAVEAT LECTOR0

Hi, Darth Thundercloud and welcome to MSE.
It's the quality and thought that goes into posts of new members that we all enjoy reading

Thanks.
yes I understand that but some of the responses are exactly what I said they were - clueless. I doubt that the liitle Englander NIMBY brigade trully understand just exactly what the banks are getting away with. The Supreme Court decision was based on a very narrow point of law and the immediate future and resurgence of claims will give them something to really harp on about. Let him who is without sin cast the first stone. I would hazard a very big guess that many of the charges taken by the banks are as a result of blissful inadvertence by their customers. it really irks me the invective of some of these types who come on different forums mouthing off how perfect they are and how wrong we are for incurring charges in the first place.

Or write to the people with the direct debit and ask why it changed and if the direct debit guarantee is applicable? If not, why not? Or failing this, vote with your feet and move to a bank with an interest-free overdraft or less punitive charging structure?
Just a thought.
Just a thought.DMP since August 2011

The point is that by the time you find out about the problems, the charges have been applied
Why? Surely you should be the one tracking what money you have or have not got. It is not the bank that should be doing that for you.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -

If you keep a check on your finances you will see problems as soon as they happen and will be able to take action to prevent further charges being applied.
It would be prudent to check your accounts daily if your finances are such that you may stray into unauthourised overdraft.
In fact doesn't everyone do that anyway?0 -

You're assuming that everyone has Internet access or is able to use telebanking. Perhaps it's a minority, but there are some people that still rely on monthly statements.0
