Haven't had a postal delivery since Thursday

  • Not at all, driving a coach full of people is completely different to somebody walking.

Have any royal mail workers died from slipping on a bit of ice?

    Didnt think so

Like I said, posties used to deliver in all weather, you're the ones who will be complaining when you lose your jobs when nobody uses royal mail because they are unable to deliver mail at an important time of the year.

How is it that couriers are able to deliver in this weather?

My Dad tells me people also used to clear the pavements outside their houses. We seem to be the only people who have bothered where I live, and the council did about 5 roads in the town, no pavements. There were kids sledging down all the hills as well, which makes things even worse. It's taken me about an extra 5 mins on a 15 min walk to get to work - if your work is walking, are you going to be able to do it all? I wouldn't, and overtime would be difficult due to the strain on legs, nevermind if they fall over and do themselves more damage. I imagine its even worse with a heavy mail bag. Cut them some slack, or campaign for people to clear up the streets properly so they can do their job!

Merry Christmas everyone :) Custardy, I hope you're not too battered to enjoy Christmas!

Yes because thats the only answer.

Hows about the royal mail workers do the job they are paid to do?

There used to be a time when nothing would stop your postie getting your mail to you.

Not anymore, its, I might slip on some ice, I cant go out in the rain, My bag is too heavy, I dont want to work the full shift im paid to work.

No wonder royal mail is going under.

Back in the olden days, there were far fewer houses, none of these super-estates built in the middle of nowhere, each town and a lot of villages had their own sorting office - nothing like the sorting warehouses we have nowadays, posties would live locally and be able to deliver locally. Now we have these large sorting offices where staff have to travel to and from to make a delivery.

Expectations were lower too. We expect everything instantly with our online culture these days.

That's because there was a story on the news a couple of years ago that if you clear a pavement and someone slips - you are had responsible -if you don't bother no liability.

Certainly where I am in Kent until Christmas eve eve it was safer to drive than walk as none of the pavements had been gritted. I think that is as much if not more so the issue than the roads around here. It simply isn't safe to walk. I'm lucky I work from home and simply went no further than my cornershop for milk and even then almost fell. I think the OP is being a tad unreasonable TBH

well you just make sure you clear them properly
  • I have a question to ask all... Why do we blame the postmen for everything that doesnt turn up?? Its a bit unfair... I know in areas that have temps as postmen and they are the ones that give the postmen bad names... Remember when they were striking and the temps admitted to stealing post?? So the few that do that sort of thing really make them look bad..
I like to think I can help but its for discussion purposes only so if I get it wrong please feel free to correct me.

Yes, you'd have to try hard to slip outside our house! Although in a sane world you'd be liable if you didn't clear it when you could.. or even better, accidents happen! What about the kids sledging down the paths then?

Well after heavy snow fall and several crashes with RM vans in the snow. I am rather pleased to report that only about half a dozen (farm)houses didn't receive their mail in the worse of the weather before Christmas from our office.

All the posties made it into work on time, were late finishing, had sore thighs and several bruises after battling through the snow.

The 6 or so houses joined together to collect their mail from the delivery office in their 4wd. There's no way on earth that the little rural vans would have made it up the hills to the farms.

Every special delivery was made on time too. So I guess we can't be all bad. :o Poor custardly though, at least it was just your finger and not your leg dear.

We had 3 temps this year. 2 of them were very good. The 3rd was on my duty as I was put in callers office. Needless to say, they all came in to have a whine about him. I apologised and promised them all would be back to normal on Tuesday. I think I got the best deal, cos now they appreciate me more :)

Well I must say I was very impressed with royal mail (surprisingly :O). I stupidly posted the last of my cards on tuesday, at about 6pm in cambridgr. I heard that one of them arrived on wednesday morning....in newcastle.

Although in the slippery conditions I did fall and hurt my back on the way to work. I dont know how the posties managed around my area. The one who did deliver was near enough skating.
