A few more. The stillo looks like it could be a cracking buy
One thing to bear in mind, at this end of the market better value may be found in buying a larger car like a vectra, mondeo etc. They tend to reach market bottom a bit quicker than the likes of Corsa's etc.0 -

Thanks for the suggestions.
Just a couple of points though - firstly I will not let her drive a Ka. A paramedic friend says that he has attended far too many accidents of young people in Ka's and, in his words, advised us not to buy a car that she could not successfully be cut out of . Maybe his opinion only but with that in my head, I cannot bring myself to buy one.
Secondly, we cannot get her a larger car as we need to do a 'like for like' for her insurance policy to do a simple change of car and not cancel her polciy and re-issue, which due to it being a fault accident would see her premium rocket. Also as she travels a fair distance each day it would start to prove too costly on petrol.
I don't want to sound negative when you have gone to such a lot of trouble but equally do not want you to waste any more time looking for cars we won't buy - thanks for all the help though, I really do appreciate your advice.0 -
personally I would avoid a 106 (poor crash rating) and next time you're in a garage ask a mechanic what they think of French cars, and then cover your ears if your sensitive.
I must agree with them after owning a Clio myself and looking after my OH's 206.
I too would avoid Ka's too many problems with them including a return to the Fords of the 1970 with some of the earlier ones suffering serious stuctural rust, spark plugs sticking in the heads on the 1.3s
I'm currently helping a friend find a replacement car, currently Mark 2 Puntos (the ones with the sharp rectangular headlamps) are well priced we found an ELX on in silver on a Y plate with service histroy and only 66,000 for just £1295 at garage in Dundee. They're good wee cars with quite a big of room inside0 -

I think your paramedic friend is being a bit overdramatic here. Any crash of a meaningful impact is going to be as dangerous in a Ka as it is in a 106 or Clio. Its part and parcel of small cars.
As for like for like. You could check. Normally you find the difference between a less desirable Vectra or Mondeo than a Clio is less than you would think. There is a lot of loading on corsas, clios etc due to the ned factor.
Personally if I was you I would be finding a nice mechanic and asking them to come and have a look at the Corsa, Stilo and Mondeo if I was you.0 -
I have a diesel 106, W reg - no problems. Always reliable, low fuel consumption. Nippy and fun to drive.
I regularly have my DD in it with me - have never worried too much about accident impact as I try to avoid them! Cars written off twice by women reversing into me.Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.
If you quote me, don't forget the capital 'M'

I'd suggest giving a Fiat Punto a consideration. Good safety record (4 ncap starts) and generally reliable and cheap to run. As said above a mk2b could be within your price range. The 1.2 engine is a reliable unit and parts and cheap.0

Nobody sets out to crash, but its one of things that sometimes you cannot avoid e.g. a drunk driver.
Also, if your daughter can stomach it, you could look at an early Skoda Fabia?0 -

you.
Maybe but as he has attended and seen the devastation, having been told that I really couldn't take the risk. And I disagree about the Ka vs Clio - the Clio is more solid and has higher NCAP rating which must count for something
Despite my reservations, DD and OH went a test drove a 1.1 106 today and have ruled it out as it had no power steering and OH said it was so heavy DD (who is very slight) would have struggled with it.I'd suggest giving a Fiat Punto a consideration. Funnily enough we are looking at a Punto 1.2 tomorrow - appears to tick the boxes so if we can negotiate a good deal it could be a goer0 -
Ok, don't laugh.
Daewoo Kalos.
Similar size to clio / 106 of that age, 2003 models for about £1500 and are safer too. Power steering, ABS, airbags and leccy windows.
Please don't get a fiat, everyone makes that mistake once

All that means is he has been called to more serious accidents involving Ka's. Could be for a number of reasons.
The Ncap ratings arent a million miles apart (3 compared to a 4) Its also worth noting the one star is due to lower body injuries (Legs) so not exactly devastation.
He's completely misrepresented the situation to you.
A crash in a Clio is going to !!!! her up every bit as much as a Ka.0
