  • Do you have to offer free P&P for all books? I was going to list some witchcraft books I`ve got they are very big and heavy hardbacks,

...The seller invoiced me for 99p + £2.75 - i altered the final amount to have a £2.75 'discount' and paid. Didnt hear from the seller and book arrived a couple of days ago, postage paid was £1.64 !!

p&p isnt just the postage charge its also for packaging.

though i agree there shouldnt of been any charge on that item anyway

Unfortunately yes regardless of their weight unless you are actually planning to use a courier and mark that obviously' in your text and use the 'freight' option and double make sure you don't show free postage.

I had to help someone do this recemtly, we went for overkill in the end and put at the top of the listing and again later in the auction that books weighed 3kg and would therefore be sent using a courier at a cost of £7.50. We even specified the courier and the service used just so the vigilantes would see this was genuine and not an attempt to get round the rules.

EDIT: After all that books did not sell.

yeah thanks, i sell a lot of books so know the costs involved, my point was my seller is clearly clueless as ive paid 99p for a book that has cost them £1.64 to post (+fees, cost of book, packaging etc)

if they hadnt tried to cheat the system i probably would have paid £3.74 for the book and they would have scraped some profit !!

  • ebay dont take any money on the postage costs so they make no money if you have a delivery charge. By having free delivery people will pay slightly more for the item, meaning ebay will take more of a slice!

Sellers are getting away with it though, I reported someone and opened a nps against them for trying to force me to pay extra p&p, my negative feedback's been removed, he's still on 100% and his account doesn't seem to have been affected at all.

What's the point of rules at all?
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

Of course, you always get people like this guy who just appear to ignore the idea of free P&P and list what they want to charge anyway

The other thing that I've noticed is happening a lot more often now is where sellers list postage as Freight/Courier so they can charge for it, even when their listing then clearly states they will send by 1st or 2nd class and not by courier at all. (I spotted this listing which does just that and he's even got the nerve to have a pop at eBay in the process...)

For example, on this listing, postage is marked as courier, but then clearly says he will use Royal Mail second class to post.

It's a shame all these listings mentioned are still up and running when they are all clearly breaking the rules. Maybe you were right afterall:
No point in reporting them though eBay seem to have a lack of interest in doing anything about it

just to update my book purchase, the book arrived in a very poor condition and after much debating I decided to leave the seller a neutral, I have since received 2 messages ftrom the seller,

    The first,

I would like to thank you very much to start your new year by being a such rude and pathetic individual. In my description, it is mentionned that the book will be sent with spine. And it is sent on 1st class next day delivery. You paid only £0.99 and £2.75 and what it cost for P and P. ( petrol, postage fees and special enveloppe). Ebay authorised it as long as it is mentionned in the adds. I wish you become a Seller one day and you will feel sorry for your comment. Perhaps, you should have done the Sale in Borders and Waterstone. Your mobile phone in your details is fake, so it proves how dishonnest you are. We both know that the item you received was in a mint condition. If not, why did not you tell me anything? - We are all human. I wish you to find happiness in your life because it seems that you are a very angry person who enjoys pushing through her frustration to innocent rather than sorting out the issue. I have blocked you from future sale.

and then a few minutes later,

Oh and By the way, the reason my add is set up like this is because I am selling abroad as well. So, your comments are really unfair and unjustified. All you are claiming were described in the adds.

Hope 2010 will bring you all the joy you are obviously missing! God Bless You and Heal you!

They have since changed their ebay ID to reflect that they charge p+P for items !!

They have been reported for their listings and are still selling and listing on a daily basis so obviously this is one 'rule' ebay cant be bothered to police !!
