Our daughter is off to uni Sept 2010 and has a conditional offer at Northumbria to do a Law degree
Have been checking out the Student finance application form.
My husband lost his job last March 2009 and decided to go self employed in June 2009. Obviously our household has taken a dip. I work and earn £25000. We have one other dependant child (9yrs old).As my husbands accounts aren't due till March 2010 it's hard to assess his income (though i do know off top my head it's not great)
The application form is asking for income for 2008/09.
If the cut off date is June 2010 shouldn't the application be assessed on earnings for 2009/10?
    Any advice would be great.
    Thank you

No, they used to do this but the number of delayed applications due to P45s not arriving on time etcetc so they changed it to the year before to make things go smoothly.

If there has been a 15% change in household income you can get a "change in circumstances form" and get assessed on more up to date information.

    Re: the OP

I would advise you to apply today. Unless you can apply yesterday instead!

Details of course changes, where you're studying etc can be changed later. It means that your parents can fill in their income details now rather than at the last minute, so you should (in theory) get the correct loan and grant when the time comes.

I'm assuming that this applies only to students in England - anyone know anything about the Scottish system - my UCAS application is in but I can't find out any information as to whether I can apply to SAAS now before I get (hopefully!) an offer.

SAAS will open its online applications usually sometime in April, so you have a few months yet.

Brilliant, thank you so much for confirming that, I've been searching for ages tonight trying to find out when I can apply to SAAS, as there was nothing on their website.

Guess it's a mad rush in April once they do open their online applications!

    Thanks again.
  • I contacted Student Finance today.

As mentioned the forms require info of household income for year ending 2009.

Ours has changed considerably since then (husband made redundant).

Was informed that i needed to complete a 'current income' form along with details of 2008/09 and it will assessed and adjusted accordingly.

These forms will be available on their web site in about one months time.

Hope this proves useful to others in a similar position.
    Titch :)

Our household income for 2008-2009 temorarily exceeded £35K,
but this year (2009-2010) was only 17K, and won't be much more 2010-2011 so can I be assured that they will definately take this into account & my daughter will get the maximum grant?

will it be recorded as such so the uni's bursary will be based on our current income?

if not then we can't afford to support her

also what has happened to the EMA guarantee as she has been getting the maximum EMA as our 2007-2008 income was also very low (below £22k)?

You have to fill in a change of circumstances form if you want to be reassessed on more upto date information.
  • Can anyone tell me what documents are needed to support an application?
Will the tax credit form with the income details on it that comes back from the tax credits people suffice or will we need P60s etc?
Thanks for any help, trying to get ahead of the game!

P60's are needed for this, the tax credits won't do.
