    thor,

    You mean de-icer spray?

It's good enough for ice on windscreen, just not necessary, a scrape with a credit card or a pot of warm water will do the trick. But you have to drive off straight away, otherwise the water you just poured will re freeze.

Frozen doors either silicone spray/grease or vaseline to prevent it.
Yes I meant de-icer(my mind must have froze up as well it seems).
When it comes to door locks, how about using those heating pads containing sodium acetate? OK It would probably take a bit of time(if it works) when slapping it onto the lock but you can always keep them handy and reheat them for use next time.
At least we don't get the severe winters we used to get two or three of decades go. As soons as we get a few inches of snow and the temp hits minus 6 or 7 the news programmes seem to think we have been hit by a mini ice age. Maybe they should take a look back in our past or across the pond last week even.

My advice, dont use water no matter how hot it is when you tip it on!

    Mark

i agree, the water will just freeze again, i heard that someone i know's neighbour was trying to melt away ice on their driveway by putting hot water down.... well it froze up and his car started sliding out of the drive!!!!:eek::eek: dont use water to combat ice! it makes it worse!

Hi. My car locks have frozen for the past 3 days. I have tried warming the key, no luck with that, pouring warm water on the door lock, still didn't work, then i had a brain wave... i got out the extension lead and plugged in a hair dryer and blew warm air on the door lock, after about 45 seconds the door lock worked. Mind you i don't think that i would do this if it started raining. Anyway i now keep the extension lead and hairdryer by the front door ready for the next time.

All the better reason to have remote locking - never had a problem with door locks getting frozen since they are never needed :T

Though trying to de-ice the windscreen on a van is rather troublesome :o

What? Door locks are needed with remote locking... all remote locking is, is a lock that can be electrically operated aswell as with a key... the locks still can and do freeze. I have remote central locking and have had a few problems.
  • Useful thread for me, went out at 7.00 pm to find the doors frozen solid and yes my de-icer is in the car :) Hopefully the forecast of -5 over night won't actually happen and with some sun tomorrow I'll be able to get in the car. Thanks for all the tips, the hairdryer one is favourite at the moment.

:embarasse Ohh right yea. I appologise - I got myself confused with the actual bit on the door you put the key in :rotfl: I should go to bed earlier.

I saw "Pre-Icer" by Carplan, in Wilkinsons the other day, spray it on the night before and allegedly stops ice from sticking to the windscreen, so you just use the windscreen wipers in the morning....

    Anyone tried it?
