Windows is shagged ~ I REALLY recommend wiping windows and reinstalling it ona freshly formatted drive
Thanks so much for your help - I feared as much
Can you tell me what is wrong with it? Is it a virus that may have got in when I used system restore or something else entirely? If it's something I've done I'd like to know so it doesn't happen again.
I'm apprehensive about wiping it all etc as I've never done it before but I think I would prefer to do that and make sure it's fixed. I clicked fix for all of the rogue files you listed but when I did a new HijackThis log most of them seemed to still be there.
I've been looking online for instructions to wipe/reinstall/refomat drive etc for the XPS16 but haven't found a good set yet - could you tell me what I need to do? I know that it's best to download and put the drivers I will need on a disc but I have no idea which drivers I will need. I also think I will lose quite a bit of my software as Dell only gave me a disc for Vista and a disc for Works.
Thanks again for your help - it's much appreciated.:hello: :hello: :hello:0 -
The dell discs that came with the computer will put the computer back to how it was from day one
You 'may' need the KEY on the sticker on the computer when you do it
make sure you FORMAT the hardrive before installing a new operating system (When you put the dell disc in you need to select the drive then select to format it ~ format both if there are 2)
Assuming you have 2 discs, once the operating system has been installed youll need to put the 2nd disc in and UNZIP the relevant files and install them to your computer (drivers for motherboard etc)
As for whats happened, im not sure. From the results so far its looking like the system restore has killed it somehow:idea:0 -

Thanks for the advice. I'm going through everything to check I've got everything I need off it before I wipe it. Could my documents, favourites etc be infected at all? I don't want to just put the same problem back on the restored system.
As far as the discs go there is a vista installation disc and a drivers disc but nothing for the software. Apparently it is downloadable via THIS Dell site. When I put my service tag in, though, it tells me my service tag is not supported. This is, apparently, quite common and it seems I'll have to call Dell and ask them to send out discs for PowerDVD, Roxio, Facial Recognition etc. They really should just send the discs with the system.:hello: :hello: :hello:0 -
Update AVIRA and give it a full scan ~ that should eliminate the vast majority of nasties that 'could' be present
The discs you have are the correct ones. Vista installation disc (Where you need to format the drive first) then the driver disc:idea:0
