...and nothing 'average' about malware infections these days

Its because they know if an 'average' user has a problem they immediately think a restore will fix it
That makes sense - I'd definitely be one of those!
The malwarebytes scan is running. I've ran the HijackThis scan but got this error message:For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able
to fix this.
If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type
notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them.
For Vista: simply, exist HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose 'Run as Administrator'.
As I have Vista I tried to do as it suggest in the last line but there is no 'Run As Administrator' on my right click menu
Thanks again.:hello: :hello: :hello:0 -
^Just specifically for this problem issue, can you log in as 'Administrator' and then run the install?0

You cant run as admin? So how do you get admin privileges?:idea:0

I am the administrator - I must be as I can alter things, download things etc and I've only ever created the one user account

Have you disabled User Account Control (UAC)? That would account for the missing Run As Administrator from your context menu.0

Not purposely as I don't know what it is or where to find it but that's not to say I couldn't have somehow done it inadvertently. How can I check?:hello: :hello: :hello:0 -
I've just checked the right-click menu of other icons on my desktop and most of them do have 'run as administrator' on the menus (ie malwarbytes, ccleaners, google chrome etc) so I don't know why it's missing from the HijackThis menu.
I don't think it's that I'm not logged as Administrator though since it is on these other ones.:hello: :hello: :hello:0 -
Mines disabled but still there

I'm fairly sure that the option can be removed from the context menu, but it's not something I've ever had the need to do.mleonard79 wrote: »Not purposely as I don't know what it is or where to find it but that's not to say I couldn't have somehow done it inadvertently. How can I check?
Go into the Control Panel and then the User Accounts section and there's the option 'Turn User Account Control on or Off'. In that section there is a check box next to 'Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer' and this should be checked.0
