  • I got insurance when we first got lex and lucky i did.

when he was 6 months he was running in the park and his back legs gave way he still would run dragging them behind him:eek:
We went to the vet they done every test they could and couldnt find anything wrong so they sent us to the royal vet collage in potters bar they also couldnt find what was wrong. it cost over £4000 for all the tests and to this day we still dont know why this happens.

Its only once in a while but i hate the fact we dont know why and i do worry about the future for him.

Sarabe - nice links, easy to do with a 5kg dog, a bit more complicated with a 39kg one ;)

Not at all. On the contrary, clicker training doesn't rely on physical strength or size which makes it suitable for all.

Oh, I meant those moments when the person with tiney dog just turns round and walks in the "other" direction.....:D That is when the size/weight of the dog may be a smallllllllllllllllllllllllll issue;)

Was that in the 'before' video or in the one when they were actually retraining the dog?

I do this with large breed dogs and their owners frequently. Not lost one yet, not even in the icy weather.;)

That was showing the dog displaying the behaviour problem not how to deal with it.

It is absolutely pointless trying to get a dog to turn away from the stimulus once it has 'gone off on one'. That's the whole point of teaching the dog to look and not react.

You keep the dog below it's threshold. You reward the 'look' before the dog reacts. If the dog is reacting you are too close to the stimulus which is why waiting for the dog to react and then trying to stop it usually fails.

The second video shows the dog learning to 'look at that dog' and being rewarded for offering the 'look' as a 'trick'.

Have you tried clicker training with Zara?

Besides - her pulling on a lead etc is NOT a major issue for me.
The issue is the BARKING (as in the title) so I would like to concentrate on this.
Especially barking when I am NOT arround t "correct" her.

    Thanks a lot

Which is where this method is really worth it's salt. Dog spots other dog. Looks at dog and back to you. 'Hey Mum, did you see me look at that dog? Didya? didya?'

Anyways when I get my magic wand back from the repair shop I'll wave it in your direction. ;)

With great respect, I don't think it is off topic myself, because the barking is a difficult thing to deal with and if you deal with the things that are also difficult and habitual but are actually simpler to see first, you may be able to move onto 'silence' training.

Using whatever method works for you of course, there are a variety of methods and each has their proponents.
