Looking to use MSN, free all day every day just to chat to friends, perhaps pick up the odd email - asked before but now I don't care about calls and texts, just want a cheap deal and decent phone! 12 month contract, cheap as poss!

web and walk doesn't allow MSN as far as I know :- (

Perhaps its still the wrong time to get something like this - my contract doesn't run out till september thought I don't mind running a second contract for a bit.

not entirely sure where my post went - I think I may have made it on a different thread (d'oh) but as per the T&C I believe one of the conditions such as 'internet based telphony' covers MSN as it has the capabilities. It is more clearly defined in their professional package that outrightly bans messaging.

But it looks good, shame the phones on offer don't seem to be that good. Does anyone have any recommendations? The Vario seems to have OK benefits but a hideous battery life and cheap plastic casing.

ok - so the vario on the web and walk seems the best offer -comes with 500 free texts and 100 anytime minutes for £27.50 + £49.99 for the phone itself.

Any better deals about or freebies I can get?

Other option is either O2 online tariff. Cause they give a "free allowance" and I can tell you when I was using my Orange SPV C550 MSN for a few weeks non-stop to talk on msn messenger / yahoo messenger I did not go over my allowance. Have to say it is a very cheap way to communicate does not use much data... Other option is with Orange you can have unlimited web access for a day/week/month heres one url http://www1.orange.co.uk/service_plans/payasyougo/extra_overview.html

I spoke to O2 last night and their useless sales team told me categorically that they had no 'free allowance' for their internet phones...

Obviously I'm some kind of rebel to the telephone industry... I just want a XDA style phone with the ability to use MSN.

I'm going to wait till august now - t-mobile are unofficially getting the Vario II which supports 3G, so I guess more companies will start taking the web and walk tarrif to compete. St00pid.
