Another way to do it, pretty much jobsworth-proof.

Reverse up to the pump, hell at one particularly busy garage which only had two pumps, they had a queue of something like 6 cars for one side of the pump and only two cars queueing for the other side, so I just turned around and queued facing backwards.

Sure people in the other queue looked at me like I was stupid, but they were still looking like that while I was filling up and they were still queueing.

In the OPs situation I would've just done a 3 point turn on the exit side of the forecourt and returned to the exact same pump.

I always use Tescos for fuel (points) and 99 times out of 100 fill on the opposite side to pumps(saves queueing), never had a problem and never spilt any fuel and I fill up twice a week.

Then what happens when the car thats just filled wants to leave? Also, re the original post, how does the attendant know what side your fillingup?, their self fill surely?

What are you doing filling your car up on supermarket fuel anyway?

    (1) Clubcard points
    (2) Convenience
    (3) It's a company car and I fill it wherever. In 3 years time it's not my car or problem. I fill my private cars with Shell fuels.
