The nearest Tesco to me has signs actively encouraging people to fill up on both sides - little pictures of cars with the hose over the top to the far side.

It's not a safety issue. Nearly all Tescos have the fill from both sides sign. I suspect the OP met a jobsworth.

It wasn't until I read it on here that I realised that in modern cars the side with the filler cap is indicated on the fuel gauge. I'd never noticed. Nifty...Not relevant to the thread of course....

    "Nearly all"

I know 100% one near me doesn't allow filling from both sides. Could have a go trying but the hose would not physically reach.

The ones that do have it clearly advertised, the ones that don't strangely enough don't.

It IS a safety issue. you'd be the first to complain no doubt when the fuel $%^$%^$^ out over your feet....

I do it frequently, and I don't tend to spill petrol all over the car.
Further, the pump stops pumping when the tank is full, so there is no risk there either.
    Definitely a jobsworth!

Why the holl car manufacturers don't put the filler in the rear middle of the car? They used to.
  • The petrol station I use only lets you fill from the filler cap side.

However there also seems a queue of cars (like mine) with the filler on the drivers side, and lots of free pumps for cars with the filler on the passenger side.

Do more cars have driver side filler caps than passenger side or is it just my bad timing (and bad luck)?
  • Tally-ho its because the people who have passenger side filler caps pay an extra 10% of the car worth to get the VIP fast lane service in the petrol station. Its a secret though that only the bigwigs and landed gentry know. Its a conspiracy!!!!!!

IIRC most Vauxhalls have driver side filling caps, along with some other popular fleet marques.

Used to have a Hyundai - filler cap was passenger side so rarely had to queue up.

Changed car to popular model - now have to queue up every time.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
