Well, I've just put my Standard Life shares, including the July 2007 freebie allocation, into this year's ISA so time will tell whether I'm right or wrong to have held onto them. However, if a predator comes along and makes a takeover bid for them, there may still be some mileage in them. They are only a small proportion of my equity portfolio, with all the other investments being in unit trusts, so I reckon I'm prepared to run the risk.

The thing that worries me is this will be the fifth day they have lost money but at the end of the day they were free ??????????

I don't consider they're free, when my endowment policy doesn't meet mortgage. I take it as part compensation and want as much from them as possible! Let's hope the downward trend stops asap!

Sorry for missing the point, I seem to have had a sense of humour bypass where SL are concerned!

How do they sleep at night! On the old style statements that Standard Life used to send, for 1991 the terminal bonus on a 25 year endowment showed 170%! You're now lucky to get 17%! Bet the lovely people that sold us these damn things aren't in the same boat.

If I said to you I'd trebled my money in the stock market over the last ten years, how is that relevant to whether you invest money today? It's just an illustration of what might be possible.

Well done to Milarky for selling @ 343p. I think I'd have done the same except that I was on holiday at the time and the best I could get on return was 311p.

Oh well, all now set for the roller coaster ;).
  • After a chance conversation with a friend i'm wondering if we only got shares for hubby's with profits pension? We also have a with profits endowment. As i was in hospital hubby sorted the details but he may not have realised re endowment. I can remeber the shares we were allocated were about £700 worth.. Does this sound right for 2 policies with them or do you just get paid on one product not both? Friend only has one product and got same amount of shares.
    Many thanks

The best thing to do is contact Standard Life and ask them.

It might depend in whose name the two policies were in.
