Standard Life Shares

As you already have a Standard Life share certificate, the cheapest way of you selling the shares is via Selftrade who charge £12.50/trade
The reason I suggest them, over one or two other brokers who are cheaper is that Selftrade will also give you £50 if you are referred by an existing customer (who also gets £50).
As such, you would make an additional £37.50 (£50-12.50) profit on the deal!.
The whole process of opening an account and sending your shares to Selftrade should only take a couple of days and then after selling, it would be 3 days before you could access the money.
Of course, I would be happy to refer you if you wish
(If anyone does did not already have a certificate, I would not advise this if you need the money quickly as you would need to wait for Computershare to send you a share certificate)

Hi,
I just read your post and was just wondering if this offer of £50 cashback is still valid? I was thinking of holding on to my shares until the September dividend payout (only a few quid in my case, but still...) and then sell when the price seems right.
Just to clarify - I rang up and asked why I hadn't been sent a share certificate when I had requested one, and I was told that my shares are held electronically.
As I'm not entirely up on the "share lingo" I asked if that meant that I can sell them via any other broker, or if I was restricted to computershare and the reply was that I'd have to ask them (the other broker) that question...
I assume that meant that I can, and was wondering if you in that case would be happy to refer me for the cashback when the time comes?
Thank you!I don't think I can hang on til Friday...0 -

Yes, the offer is still valid and my contact details can be found in the Selftrade referral thread (see post 242) or just send me a PM. - I'd be happy to refer you or anyone elseJust to clarify - I rang up and asked why I hadn't been sent a share certificate when I had requested one, and I was told that my shares are held electronically.

However, Computershare are quite expensive for selling shares and on the payment of a £12/15 fee they will instead send you a share certificate or transfer your shares to another broker of your choice (i.e. Selftrade).
If joining Selftrade, the fee Computershare charge you for moving brokers will be refunded by Selftrade, in addition to their referral offer.
If someone already has a Standard Life share certificate, they simply need to send it to Selftrade, together with a CREST transfer form instead - after opening their account.
Once the shares have been registered against your Selftrade account, youre then free to sell whenever you wish (by telephone or online) for £12.50

But the market makers and the institutions will be hoping that small shareholders will sell on this price dip - and some will.
How many sell will determine the extent of the dip. No-one can be sure of our collective psychology. Hence it could be a volatile time. Or not
.
price should be £4.00 plus --- will get there

Thanks Sunil for that useful bit of info! I will get back to you when I'm looking to sell my shares! Seeing as you know so much and I so little... Can I ask another question?
I quite obviously do not own any other shares, so what happens when I go to sell them? Do I pay tax at the rate I normally pay on interest from savings on what I make from the sale, or how does it work? There is probably another thread for this somewhere - sorry!I don't think I can hang on til Friday...0 -
You've got about £9K capital gains tax allowance pa, so as long as the value of your free shares doesn't come to this you have no tax to pay on sale.0

Not really a question, more of an observation...
Isn't it slightly mad that if you have enough money to invest it, you can make 9K per year tax free, but if you really can't afford to risk loosing a single one of your hard earned pennies and put them in a savings account instead, then you only get a 3K tax free allowance (which would realistically make you tops £180 a year) before the tax man starts taking 20% of whatever you earn in interest...?
You'd have to put 3K a year away for an awful lot of years before your tax free interest would mount up to 9K!
It's a mad world!I don't think I can hang on til Friday...0 -
I hold my SL shares with Halifax Share Dealing but, as of today's date (18th), the free shares are yet to appear. Has anyone an idea of how long it should take them?
[If I have to query this with Halifax, I suppose I have to ring the 0845 number?].....under construction.... COVID is a [discontinued] scam0 -

I'd give Halifax a call, they can look up your details and let you know whats going on.It might be that it takes a while for the shares to get transferred.

I suspect that it will happen next week.[If I have to query this with Halifax, I suppose I have to ring the 0845 number?]
Otherwise, have a look at the Say No to 0870 website for an alternative number
