My mum sews and makes the odd loose cover etc for people - though I don't think she would do anything now, until after Christmas.
She will be with me at your craft fair - or if you are interested I can pm you her number.:xmassmileDJWW - cos we won't let it!0 -

I sell handmade soaps (fully certified) and wax melts amongst other things, and I'm in regular contact with people who make the same things as me and live in the UK (mainland).
Recently there have been lot of visits at short notice, from trading standards regarding soaps and candles which look like food (cupcakes etc)...TS appear to be checking both websites and craft fairs and really clamping down on what can be sold and what would pose a choking hazard to children! There has been a bit of an uproar about it all, as many big dept. stores are still selling cupcake candles & soaps...but as crafters, if we don't stick to the regs, I would imagine our insurance wouldn't be worth anything if someone made a claim. One friend in England had a call from TS who said they would be with her within the hour, and some of her candles with decorated tops had to be withdrawn straight away and some of her wax products were taken away for "bite" testing!!
as i sell soaps and bath bombs etc i contacted trading standards a good while back now and and was told in northern ireland that it was down to the councils to decide wether or not we can sell them here TS app have nothing to do with it here. I also rang the Council who told me that all was fine that was last year some time0 -

Ummm, and then people wonder why so few of us 'oldies' share their dates on here!
Didn't see any mention of chutneys/jams before now - hope you are telling organizers exactly what you are selling - hate it when you are assured you are the only table, only to find others sneaking afew on!
Same for the jewellery guys I suppose.DJWW - cos we won't let it!0 -
i do know that it is really reallys trict in england with regards to things looking like food but at end of day better safe than sorry0
-
smokie - sorry to offend, I am unsure why. And yes, the organisers know us well, so they know what we are selling.
I was not aware that craft fairs limited each type of stall to only 1? I always seem to see many jewellery stalls. What happened to healthy competition?0 -
Healthy competition occurs on a level playing field - my problem is always with people who say they sell one thing and then arrive with this plus other products, in my case chutney and jam, but this also happens with card makers and jewellers - people think it is OK to stick afew bits on their stall.
Good craft fair organizers do limit the number of similar stalls, others take what they can get and I tend to do very few of the latter.
I have no issue with competition, and am good friends with many of the other professional food producers locally, who have spent many hours having their produce and labels approved by all the relevant authorities. As these products have a very low retail value, I always ask organizers if there will be any similar stalls so I can decide if I want to take part or not in an individual event.
You certainly have not offended me, but selling pottery, dog biscuits and cupcakes, is entirely different from selling pottery and jam, you should have been up front from the start. If you have decided to extend your range after viewing my website, well I am flattered, however crafters are involved with expressing their creativity and not simply copying others.DJWW - cos we won't let it!0
