When you are connected to the internet data is being sent to and from your computer.
Its measured in bytes, typical limits being 10 or 40 Gigabytes.
Every time you load a page on your browser, download a programme, a song from itunes or watch something on the iPlayer you are using up your allowance. In addition everytime you upload a photo or movie clip to a web album or You tube you are using your allowance.

    Some explanation here:-

There is no scam here. Sky's broadband is one of the cheapest on the market if you have Sky TV. Paying £5 per month is virtually nothing. If you download a lot then the £10 Sky Max product is more suitable and is still low in price. I do not work for or like Sky... but you really cant say them bumping you up to the next package up for downloading or using too much is unfair. If you don't like it, don't use the internet so much :P.
  • I've been with Sky for over 2 years. I was on the 2gb package with no problem. A couple of months ago I increased my allowance because I wasted the extra speed. My internet habits haven't changed and i've now used 11gb in 2 weeks! I don't watch tv OR videos, or download music. I don't have anything connected except one laptop and I am the only person in the house.
I don't see how I can suddenly be using the same as my friend, who has iplayer, and games and downloads music. I have just installed a meter which is telling me i've used about 1kb in the last 24 hours. I'm not technically minded but even Iknow that doesnt add up to 11gb in 2 weeks.
Something is suddenly very wrong with the SKy statistics and what worries me most is that my usage goes down, then an hour later it goes up! How can that happen? begs the question how reliable it their monitor and what can we do?

A longshot, but perhaps a neighbour is piggy-backing onto your wireless connection. Could try switching off modem every time your not at your computer?

I've been moved up to the £5 package too. I've supposedly gone over my limit for the last two months though I've had Sky Broadband since it's inception and my usage hasn't changed which I find suspicious.

That said I doubt I can get better elsewhere for the money so I guess I'll have to grin and bear it.

today I too have had email from sky broadband. I am on baseline 2gb package with no problems for a couple of years but now have gone over my limit. although they have not charged me this time! I too do not d/l music films or watch tv via internet. I have replied to their email asking why!!!! going to disconect when not on line just incase someone is piggybacking. and going to dle a meter. thanks to those who suggested last two.

I too have had my first warning from Sky, I do however wonder on the legalities of what they are doing. (although I'm sure a company like sky have covered all bases)

In my area, the maximum broadband speed I can achieve is 2gb. If Sky upgrade me, I will be paying for a service I am not able to use. Almost like me paying for the sports channels, but then Sky not letting me watch them!

I wasn't suprised to go over my limit, but in the interest of money saving, I may challenge sky and see what they say. I do afterall pay them around £150 per month for all the services.

    Pedants corner.

You mean the maximum achievable speed 2 Mbps, the 2 Gb you refer to is the amount of data you are allowed to download.

Yeah sorry, I have a maximum speed of 2MB's, with a 2GB download limit.

So by moving up a package I will have 2MB download still and judging by the 12GB+ Sky have reported I have used in the last 2 months, I will be increasing to the £10 per month package within a couple of months.

  • I too have had the email warning that I am over my allowance and have just had another saying that I have used 70%, with 22 days to go. I've never had this problem before and have been with them for two years. It seems that it must be a problem with the new usage tool but what can we do? Has anybody been able to get Sky to back down on this issue yet?
