Sky BB usage issue

I am currently on the Sky Base rate for broadband. Then the other day I recieved an email saying that I'd gone over my usage. I looked deeper into this and Sky's usage tool says that I am 250+% beyond my 2gb limit in only 2 days. I am sure that I havent downloaded this much stuff.
The thing that has made me suspicious is the fact that if I go over my limit once more they automatically up my package to a £5 pm deal.
Has anyone else encoutered a similar problem???? or is it just me

Do you use Torrents, use the BBC iPlayer or similar, any internet activity counts towards your download limit.
I regard myself as a low user but still typically use 8-9Gb bandwidth a month.

I suggest you get yourelf a bandwidthe monitoing tool, I use Netmeter myself from Read Error. http://www.metal-machine.de/readerror/index.php?PHPSESSID=2f767d5920510aaf68b66598cce20b66&page=13

BTW The Everyday package is £10/month unless you have Sky Talk.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Is your anti-virus up to date?
  • I do use torrents, but not that much. The antivirus is up to date. I have installed net-meter and I will be keeping tabs on my usage.

We've already used 25% of our 10Gb allowance with 25 days still to go!

Why do they have to be so stingy with the limits? Is there any technical reason (is network capacity really that limited?) or is it just a scam to force everyone to upgrade to unlimited?

Sky have x amount of bandwidth available - they cannot afford to buy in the capacity to give everyone max line speed all day every day for £10pm or whatever.

It's not a "scam" at all.

If you want them to be less stingy, prepare to pay more per month. A better connection will cost you ~£100pm, but your looking at one that isn't oversold at all.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.
  • Hi same has happened to me - on the 2gb limit and have had email to say we have used 38gb so far with a week left to go. Have emailed them and asked if they can tell me why our usage has suddenley gone up so much have email back from them but they have not answered my question
  • To all those who may or may not be aware of SKY using a USAGE TOOL which monitors your use of the Internet.
I would suggest you down load a free MONITOR which will keep an exact check on what you are really using. I have already proved that the stats that they seem to be acquiring bare no resemblance to what you actually use.
This is some of what happens.
1 The SKY router is constantly sending bit rate between itself and the Sky server using up your monthly allowance without being on the internet.
I have now stopped this happening
    2. If you use SKY as your home page it will again send bit rate even when you open an existing email ATTACHEMENT
Suggest you choose a different HOME PAGE.
    3. In the last instance of a family member the SKY USAGE TOOL was saying he has used 11GB in the last month, and in two days he had used some 1.55gb, GUESS WHAT HE IS NOT ON LINE AS HE CANNOT GET CONNECTED and this has been the case all over Christmas 2009.
4.In my particular case SKY Usage tool has me as using 1/2gb in two days I have not been online MY OWN ON BOARD COMPUTER MONITOR which monitors all the traffic going in and out of the SKY router shows I HAVE USED 50mb as of this moment 28 Dec 2009.
I think you will guess from these brief stats SKY IS MANIPULATING STATS to enable them to push you up to another BROADBAND package until they eventually get most paying for the UNLIMITED PACKAGE.
TIME TO SPREAD THE WORD AND FIGHT BACK, move to another provider and if you are troubled by cancelling the SKY TV Package.
SKY have to provide access to FREESAT using the SKY BOXES this can be obtained with out paying for a new BOX just get the appropriate card from SKY for one off payment of £20 phone 08448244400.
Its time SKY WAS BROUGHT BACK DOWN TO EARTH they may then respect the customers who pay their wages.

Are you sure that it isn't the software? did you install the software on every machine? is your wireless router secure and you changed the password?

What the router sends back to Sy is minimal, and many routers will send connection info back and forth - its a way of saying "hello, I'm online still - let me stay on".

Having Sky as your home page makes no difference to if you have Google - both download data from the internet - it's just that Sky's home page is a larger size than Google's.

Email attachments? Are you looking at these via Sky's webmail service through a web browser? If so, then they will obviously download each time - if you don't want that, set up Outlook/Outlook Express/etc and make them download the emails as a POP mail service.
