    Obviously I understand it, but I cannot see what might a five year old do at school that cannot be replicated at home.
    I understand that not every parent will be able to teach their child higher maths or biology but surely the stuff that five year old learn is not complicated and can be explained by any adult?
    As for other answers - interacting with other children can be achieved in Florida as well. And anyway missing of three weeks of "interacting with other children" is not going to seriously affect the child's future.

    If you fail to see what school can bring to a five year old, and that certain things cannot be replicated, then you do not understand it.

    I did give you one example so I did indeed answer your original question
    Interacting with other children, teachers, other parents. (not in the same way as one would on holiday)
    There are others that I can think of but see no need to list them as, if you can't see the value of one, I assume you will see no point in any others

    In what way do you think that being sat in a classroom with 30 other kids all the same age being quiet and waiting to be told what to do by a teacher is interacting better than being amongst hundreds of people of different age groups from all over the world? The classroom situation doesn't prepare a child for the 'big wide world', quite the opposite infact.

    Any teacher who holds a whole class back whilst they show one child what they did for the past three weeks (as some posters seem to think would happen) wants firing anyway. Due to the government enforced national curriculum, teachers have a pretty good idea what they are covering over the next month as they tend to teach the same age group year after year, so if they were concerned that a child may fall behind they could let the parent know what they would be covering during the absence, especially in the case of the OP who had talked with the class teacher about the holiday before they went.

    But the child wouldn't miss interacting with other children, parents or even teachers for that matter, they just wouldn't be doing it in class. The classroom isn't the only place where children can be educated, and those parents who think it is are missing out on a whole load of their kids childhood as well as depriving their children of much of the joy of learning.

    Predominantly it will be letter-sound correspondences (which could be taught by a parent if that parent understood how to teach these and had the inclination/time to do so). Other stuff might include larger-scale science work and ICT based learned - much of which cannot be covered in the home due to lack of knowledge/equipment. Or perhaps all the 'groundwork' for longer-term projects which means the child comes back 'part-way through' and so can't fully learn from what happens later on.

    Other stuff (like number work) could be taught by a parent, but many simply won't bother or have the time.

    I still get children in Year 5, who have gaps in their blending/segmenting skills because they 'missed' stuff for one reason or another (not just holidays) in Reception/Key Stage 1.
