oh dear, some people here really need to lighten up, the kid is 5 for gods sake! i've known parents that have moved house and moved their kids school between 14-16, thats one heck of a lot more disruptive than a 5 year old having a nice holiday?!

in the grand scheme of things, that child wasnt going to have learnt anything in those 3 weeks that they wouldnt have learnt either before or after, or anything that couldnt have been caught up on as homework. at 5 years old they arent going to be having long, in depth history lessons that they would have needed to take notes and write essays on, for example. some writing practise, and basic numeracy, art projects of some sort perhaps.

whenever anyone on this board posts about anything whatsoever to do with schools or teachers, all the resident teachers always then come out and tell us how hard it is, how low the wages are and how high the workload is :p

maybe that's because some people seem to unable to grasp the concept for themselves and need to be enlightened by people who do actually have some idea of what the job is REALLY like!

What exactly can a five year old do at school that can not be explained by parents at home?

the fact that you even have to ask that question is indicative of your lack of knowledge on this subject!

I agree with so many other posters, what good does a fine do anyone?
If a parent wanted to go on holiday in term time, the £50 would be worth it because of the money saved. Who gets the £50? Not the school.
A child can learn so much from travelling, even if it is only to Florida, which isn't all Disney and even the bits that are Disney can also be extremely educational.
Take Animal Kingdomn for instance. A young child will learn so much there about animals and dinosaurs.
I would guess that at 5 years of age, a holiday to Florida would give more valuable education than being at school.
Another thing that I don't understand if the school thinks being on holiday is so bad, why do so many of them devote so much time the week before Christmas playing games, watching DvD's, having parties, spending an afternoon making Christmas Cards and dressing up?
My Grandson has not done any Maths, English, Science etc all this week but has done the above.

I wish him luck with his GCSE in Disney Studies - I predict an A*

Bit harsh dont you think? My parents took me out of school in my early teens to have a 2 week holiday every year and it certainly didnt do me any harm. Im not saying its right or wrong as i think its for parents to judge themselves but it certainly didnt affect my grades, my future career or hindered me being successful in what I do.

Not really no. people are always going on about how their kid learn more on holiday than they do in school and for the most part it is just claptrap to justify them taking their kids out of school. They are, in the main, hanging out at the beach/pools/disneyland etc. If that is the case that they learn more on holiday then they are in the wrong school!.

It is not so bad with regards to a 5 year old as in the OP's case but to take a secondary school child out of school on an annual basis for 2 weeks just to go on holiday is inconsiderate to the child, to the other kids in the class and to the teacher. It just cannot be justified. You abide by the rules of the school you have chosen to send your child to.

It's when I get parents who come up to me and announce they're taking a term time holiday can I set a lot of work for them to do that get my goat. When I suggest keeping a journal or anything like that, that's actually going to be useful and meaningful - no chance... what they want are a pile of worksheets to be bodged together on the plane over.

I won't set work for a termtime holiday - the work IS set, it's available in the classroom - if you take your kids out and make the choice to remove them from that environment... your problem matey because I'll be going on with business as usual in school - the world doesn't revolve around your 2 weeks in Ibiza or wherever.
Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!
  • My husband would not set work, nor give extra attention to enable the child to catch up with work they had missed. It would be up to the parent and/or pupil to make sure they caught up. As you say, the work is available in the school. There are 30 other kids to teach .

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

The fact that you have chosen to ignore other answers proves
well it can get all very silly and name calling can't it?

Children do a lot of things in school, not all of which can be replicated in the home.

I assume you can understand that.

Obviously I understand it, but I cannot see what might a five year old do at school that cannot be replicated at home.
I understand that not every parent will be able to teach their child higher maths or biology but surely the stuff that five year old learn is not complicated and can be explained by any adult?
As for other answers - interacting with other children can be achieved in Florida as well. And anyway missing of three weeks of "interacting with other children" is not going to seriously affect the child's future.
