Thank you for your thoughts on this. It is causing me a great deal of stress, as I want to be as fair as possible, but not to the detriment of my business.
Had it been any other time of the year I wouldnt hesitate to allow 3 days, but business has been slow this year (same as everyone else) and at Xmas we have the chance to make up for that. As i said I`m happy to allow the day of the funeral its just the days the either side of it that are causing me problems.
We are only a small hairdressing buisness with 3 stylists and it will mean letting a lot of clients down at a very important time of the year.

Could you get someone in from an agency or are these the stylists regular clients? If they are her regular clients, then I'm sure that they will be very understanding of her situation - well likely most of them will be! Personally, if I had to travel to a funeral, and was denied the time off, I would be taking the days anyway and just not returning to my place of work. Given that you have a few days to make contact with people who would be coming in on those days, I'd start phoning them to reschedule if at all possible.

What a very mean spirited attitude to have, i'm sure many employees of companies feel the same way, especially those who work in the financial industry.

Yeah, I've grown mean spirited having had staff taking the p1ss. There are as many dishonest / unkind / lazy bosses as staff, but I've had - and worked with - more of the latter.

OP - have you sorted it?

okay its maybe not a law set in stone but its all about been sympathetic to folks.
i myself need some time off to bury my gran and i asked my boss and he said, and i quote..

"you are entitled to 3 days paid leave, just let me know when"

    decent boss = happy employee
mean non sympathetic boss = rightfully !!!!ed off employee.

That was in yor case - it's not the same for everyone, and small businesses struggle.

Sadly, it doesn't alwayswork just like this - you can have a decent boss, and lazy / lying employees.

It can get to the stage where a decent boss is taken advantage of by lazy staff, and ultimately decent boss has to shut down business. Not good for anyone.

I am only allowed one day off for the funeral of grandparents in my job at the NHS. Also it does say 'manager's discretion' in our guidelines as grandparents aren't classed as immediate family.

If they are using their own annual leave and if you can get cover for them, think of it as a one off.

wow what a mean boss

all employees have a right to 3 days paid leave for funerals, if you sack her over this i hope she takes you to court,BUT if she is pulling a fast one then she deserves all she gets.

Do you have any proof of this?

    .

No wonder your staff do that with the sttitude you seem to have. Employees don't usually enjoy working for mean spirited employers like yourself who are automatically going to cast doubts on their honesty. I would be unkind to you, and wouldn't necessarily wish to do the job to the best of my abilities if you took that attitude with me as well.

It is not the responsibility of the employer to ensure that their employees "enjoy" working for them. It's a contract - they do their work, they get paid.

28 non-consecutive sickies in one year tells me everything I need to know about this young woman.

Anyone here got a hair appointment booked for sometime in the next week? I know how I'd feel if it was cancelled at this stage of the game.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

I've got a hair appointment booked on Tuesday - i would be gutted if they canceled it as i really need my hair doing! but i would understand if it was canceled for a funeral. However if she was my regular hairdresser and she kept being off sick and kept canceling my appointments i wouldn't be quite so understanding.

I think that 3 days off for a grandparents funeral at the busiest time of year is pushing it slightly, add in to the mix 28 sick days! I would give her the day and maybe the following morning, it would also be unpaid. The moral of the story is don't take the Micky taking sick days your bosses goodwill will only last for so long, a good honest trusting relationship will last for much longer!

I'd rather have my haircut appointment cancelled than have someone coughing and sneezing all over me whilst doing my hair so that I caught a cold myself just before Christmas!

    Hi
Sorry I`ve not been replying to your posts, just not had the time.

She is taking Tue & Wed off, as cannot have the car due to boyfriends work commitments, ( would have been a problem now anyway with the snow) he does odd days for his father here and there, but nothing regular, cant ask her mother as its unfair to her.

Her father has arranged the train for her and unable to get any other times than first thing on tuesday morning and back on wednesday night. I have been promised that she will be in work for xmas eve.

Totally unwilling to work extra this last week, or tomorrow to fit the cancelled clients in.

Will she come back for xmas eve ? Who knows.

    I will let you know.
