Surely if you would normally allow 3 days off and from the comment above it is inferred that others may have had this, you should allow the 3 days - on the other hand 28 days for various illnesses is terrible - but that's a different issue and should be handled as such

I have only ever been ask for 1 day off in the past, in these circumstances, and that is all that has been given.

I agree the sick are a completely different issue, and are being treated as such.

wow what a mean boss

all employees have a right to 3 days paid leave for funerals, if you sack her over this i hope she takes you to court,BUT if she is pulling a fast one then she deserves all she gets.

There is no legal right to paid leave for funerals. I have now checked the law quite closely on this matter.

our boss always gives 3 days off for a funeral

Presumably if it is a close relative, and if it is needed for travelling.

I can't imagine any boss giving three days off for the funeral of your best mate's step-nan, which is taking place ten minutes walk from your workplace.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

No wonder your staff do that with the sttitude you seem to have. Employees don't usually enjoy working for mean spirited employers like yourself who are automatically going to cast doubts on their honesty. I would be unkind to you, and wouldn't necessarily wish to do the job to the best of my abilities if you took that attitude with me as well.

I was speaking as both an employer and an employee, I've seen lazy staff that aim to take the p1ss. I'm not saying you're like this, in fact there's a good chance you and I have the same work ethic - you'd perhaps be surprised how few of us there are....

Hope it all works out OP

Why have you waited until now to check?

Had you implemented a policy it would have been transparent to all parties and would ensure fairness and consistency across the board.
Excessive sickness absence is a different matter and should be approached as such and dealt with seperately.

The OP only has three employees. It has probably never arisen before.

I don't know what the outcome of this was but I think the OP gets a rough treatment from the people who thuink this in incompassionate.

I don't believe employers have to give any leave for a bereavement (however if you gave nothing this would be harsh).

If this employee was reliable I personally would have no problem in giving them the leave however if they have had 28 non-consecutive sick days and they are on a final warning I would suggest you are wasting your time an money giving them concessions like this.

As a business owner why bother rewarding a member of staff who has let you down so many times? It's not fair on the other staff who are reliable.

Yes, it would be interesting to know what the OP agreed and what the employee did.

Although if she didn't make it back when expected, did anyone else hear about the lady who'd gone out to buy her turkey on Christmas Eve and had been stranded ever since by the weather? I think that was somewhere like Fife, though. Here it is.
