all employees have a right to 3 days paid leave for funerals, if you sack her over this i hope she takes you to court,BUT if she is pulling a fast one then she deserves all she gets.
I'm afraid that's just not true. Please quote the law that states this?

OP, what have you decided to do? I can understand when running a business you have to weigh the compassionate reasons with not wanting to be walked all over.

I feel, morally, their is only one 'wrong' option here and that is allow no time off. I would only expect the day of a funeral off from my employer, to be honest, asking for 3 at christmas is just ridiculous in business terms, especially where you are essential a retail business!

Had it been any other time of the year I wouldnt hesitate to allow 3 days, but business has been slow this year (same as everyone else) and at Xmas we have the chance to make up for that.

Surely if you would normally allow 3 days off and from the comment above it is inferred that others may have had this, you should allow the 3 days - on the other hand 28 days for various illnesses is terrible - but that's a different issue and should be handled as such

Wow, what an unfortunate lack of awareness of the practicalities involved around unexpected time off at busy times for a tiny business with only 1 or 2 or very few staff.

tricky one. and part of the reason I dislike having staff. sometimes, you just don't know if they're honest.

I'm suspicious of the situation, but that's probably because you seem to be a little.

Perhaps you could ask her to contact the clients to try to reschedule the appointments? Clients may be more understanding, and she has to tell a lot more people about it.

Perhaps also offer to send flowers to the funeral?

There seem to be some very cynical individuals on this forum. "Part of the reason [you] dislike having staff is because sometimes you just don't know if they're honest"?!

What a very mean spirited attitude to have, i'm sure many employees of companies feel the same way, especially those who work in the financial industry.

wow, what a lack of empathy for a member of staff who has lost a family member.

okay its maybe not a law set in stone but its all about been sympathetic to folks.
i myself need some time off to bury my gran and i asked my boss and he said, and i quote..

"you are entitled to 3 days paid leave, just let me know when"

    decent boss = happy employee
mean non sympathetic boss = rightfully !!!!ed off employee.

  • To the original poster, you said you wouldn't hesitate in giving the employee 3 days off at any other time of year, but not in December.

Your staff member's commitment is to the family, not to you primarily in such a situation, and it is your responsibility as the employer to arrange suitable cover.

I would say that 3 days is reasonable. In the long run hopefully yout employee will be very grateful and return the favour.

If you'd read the rest of the thread, then you might understand why in this case the employer is struggling to do this.
