  • wigansheryl, you cannot expect a buyer to wait 15 working days for their item. You should issue a refund after a sufficient period of time has passed and then claim with the Royal Mail after 15 working days.

  • I'm sorry but I don't agree with you razorbladekisses. As a buyer on ebay (as well as a seller), I would be prepared to wait for the royal mail timescale to expire before seeking any kind of refund, particularly at this time of year. as it is ebay have found in my buyer's favour and refunded...what's the betting the item now turns up!!

If I am aware as a buyer that I have only paid for second class standard post, then I think I've got to, in good faith, wait for the full period to see whether the item arrives.

I agree with you. I am a buyer and a seller and as such when I am a buyer I wait often over the magic 15 days, because I live in the real world and know delays happen beyond a sellers control.
If I waited ages and it arrived post marked the day before then I would complain.
However Paypal postage is clever (I don't use it) as it is a printed label with no date.
Buyers need to cut sellers some slack. RM is the most resonable postage for small items but not the most efficient. we have to work with what is available.
  • If I was you buyer and you made me wait 15 working days for a refund you would get a neg. Why make a buyer wait that long, I just don't think it's fair.

I am not making you wait razorbladekisses - I despatch within 24 hours of payment. Your chosen payment method of royal mail second class is making you wait!

How can you give negative feedback to someone who has despatched by within 24 hours, it is not the buyer's fault royal mail has this policy. if the buyer wants to be sure they should pay extra for recorded delivery

It's not the buyer's responsibilty though, is it. They buy something, and expect it in a timely fashion. Most buyers don't give a toss how the items's sent (within reason... hand delivered by an eskimo may raise an eyebrow :p), as long as it gets to them in one piece.

Recorded delivery is purely for the seller's protection should Paypal get involved, after all the buyer already knows if it's turned up or not, they don't need to look online to find out. Paypal do need to look though, and if you can't give them the means to do so (a tracking number), you'll be seen as not co-operating and not win the case.

No you are responsible in getting the item to the buyer. If you wish to be covered via paypal as a seller make recorded the default for all your listings. If not the buyer will choose the cheapest method in the knowledge that if it doesn't arrive they can get refunded via paypal
  • I have just had a dispute opened on me by a seller in italy who is claiming that they have not received an item.

I posted this item on the 8th Dec and was told it would take up to 5 working days to arrive, but to allow a bit extra due to christmas.

This was posted royal mail airmail and not tracked or signed for.

The value of the item was approx £40 so i figured that the insurance provided by RM of £39 would be sufficient.

I have responded to the dispute via paypal but am assuming that they will find in favour of the buyer due to other peoples posts.

My only gripe really is that it is only just over the 5 working days, plus the extra to allow for christmas, and he is very quick to open a dispute.

When I emailed him to let him know that I had posted the item he replied "did you not send airsure or signed for as if you havent then i probably wont receive it". All very strange.

My other question is regarding paypal taking funds from my account. Now originally he had paid his money into paypal and it was showing as being there, but I was unable to withdraw until 21 days unless a dispute had been raised.

Now this is showing as being removed, so say they find in favour of the buyer, will this amount simply dissapear from the page and therefore the buyer has his money back, or will that dissapear and then paypal will look to me for the same amount?
  • don't even get me started on this! I sent an item abroad, seller didnt want to pay the extra for tracking. then guess what? claims he didnt recieve it, puts in a paypal claim.
I had the proof of postage reciept, but because it wasnt tracked couldnt prove delivery even though I could proove postage. I complied with all steps of the dispute, two months later they find in the buyers favour, putting my account -£75. I got a letter from a debt collection agency for the amount I have to pay it back, so the buyer gets a full refund and the item, I am out of pocket £75 for the item and the £20 postage, plus all the ebay fees. I was told by the DCA if I refused to pay I would be taken to court.
it's disgusting how for some items you are forced to give free postage, if you have to pay yourself for every item to be tracked there would be little money to be made on ebay. it's put me off selling on there for life

That's why I barely sell anything any more! Bidders can say they haven't received it and they are automatically believed. Expected to post something for free by eBay too! Who are they to tell us we have to give free postage? It's not fair but that is the rules and the only option is to not sell on eBay. This is why sellers are leaving in droves....and eBay wonder why.
  • I am clearly very naive in the workings of ebay, despite having sold over 100 items!! I simply act in good faith in all my transactions and some of the potential practices suggested on this board by buyers simply wouldn't cross my mind!! (ie choose cheapest postage method knowing you could just raise a dispute and have ebay rule in your favour)
