don't even get me started on this! I sent an item abroad, seller didnt want to pay the extra for tracking. then guess what? claims he didnt recieve it, puts in a paypal claim.
I had the proof of postage reciept, but because it wasnt tracked couldnt prove delivery even though I could proove postage. I complied with all steps of the dispute, two months later they find in the buyers favour, putting my account -£75. I got a letter from a debt collection agency for the amount I have to pay it back, so the buyer gets a full refund and the item, I am out of pocket £75 for the item and the £20 postage, plus all the ebay fees. I was told by the DCA if I refused to pay I would be taken to court.
it's disgusting how for some items you are forced to give free postage, if you have to pay yourself for every item to be tracked there would be little money to be made on ebay. it's put me off selling on there for life

The first rule of Paypal is understand the buyer and seller protection policies.

You have to prove DELIVERY, and this is clearly stated a number of times in the paypal help screens. proof of postage only shows that, not that anyone received it. If you did not have tracking information, then you simply could not have complied with the paypal requests, as they ask for proof of delivery.

It is now up to you to make a claim through Royal Mail for the lost item which you can do as you have proof of postage.

Postal Insurance and tracking is for the benefit of the seller, not the buyer.

  • To be fair mary, the reason that eBay sale went wrong was your own fault. You should have chosen the correct postage method and then you would have been fully covered.

  • Steve, surely the certificate of posting will be void as the item was worth over £39?

Possibly - lesson #2 learnt then!

Saying that though, I've posted an item worth £45 by 1st recorded and claimed it back as lost, but only received the maximum £39 back. In blimmin stamps...

    Thanks for all your replies.

The buyer sent me an email this am saying 'wots hapenin wid my money den ????????'

I replied politely it has left my account and paypal has closed the case, they have now left me my first negative feedback  I helped them all the way through the resolution centre and they have a full refund.

There was no need for that at all.

The fact that they had to open a dispute could be the problem. If I have to open a dispute to get a refund normally I would give the seller a neg as it shouldn't have to go that far

Are you saying I should have refunded them without going through the resolution centre? I thought you had to go that route as I had proof of the fact that I sent the item?

Proof that you sent the item means nothing to paypal you have to prove delivery. If a customer of mine says an item has not arrived and its been a reasonable period of time. I refund then claim via royal mail (using proof of posting). If it is an item i have sent tracked has a signature and the buyer still claims its not arrived I will point this out to them. Then they could open a dispute but they would lose as I have proof of delivery.
  • Ideally you should have refunded the buyer before they involved PayPal. You had proof of postage but not proof of delivery so it wouldn't help you in a PayPal case.
