  • I don't understand the court decision. It seems like as long as there is one person who voted will no longer be a member of the staff during the strike period, then the strike is illegal.

Even if one assumes that the 1000 staff that shall be redundant by the time the strike periods roll along have all voted yes to strike, taking them off the figures the percentage who voted yes is still well over 90%. By the definition of the law, there is no reason for any union to hold a ballot, or for any union to exist.

How fair is this society exactly?

How I wish we had an 'unthank' button on this forum.:mad::mad:

You CHOSE to be in your job - you knew that it entails working over Christmases, Easters, family birthdays - don't try to make us feel sorry for you! Millions of people in this country have to work at Christmas, for goodness sake! Policemen, firemen and doctors do it all the time and just get on with it.

If you don't like your job - then leave it. Maybe spend more time with your small children. In the current economic situation, there are plenty of people who would love your job.

Just because people have chose something in the past doesn't mean that they have to accept everything that choice has thrown at them since it was made. Have you never complained to your wife/husband/partner?

Sure. But I don't take it out on my customers.

This is because you don't understand the rules.

The ballot was invalidated because the union leadership (on their 100k-plus salaries!) failed to ensure that only staff allowed to vote were given a vote. If you had previously accepted redundancy, then you couldn't vote according to the law on industrial relations.

I'm not convinced that most BA staff are actually that upset about the strike being invalidated.
    From Poland...with love.

    They are (they're)
    sitting on the floor.
    Their
books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.

Plus, I had heard that some of the people who voted had ALREADY left BA!

I can see what you mean, but I was referring to the specific point that the BA staff member was making about working unsociable hours.

And as fablad75 said, yes I would be annoyed too, and would do something about it, but I wouldn't take it out on completely innocent people.

No one is disputing the fact that cabin crew make sacrafices in their personal life because of their job.

However, I think it is fairly obvious that such a job is best suited to young, single people. Once they meet someone and settle down, certainly if children have arrived, then it is time to change jobs.

No one is forcing them to stay in this line of work and if it no longer suits your needs then you should look for a more settled job. Not complain about unsocialable hours.

Plus, you know, cabin crew aren't the only people who work long and inconvenient hours. But we don't all go on strike about it. Could you imagine if we all adopted that approach? The country would fall apart!

Ahh, but there is the pension, the pension. Why do you think there is such a big black hole in the BA pension scheme, and why BA has on average much older CC than any other British carrier.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

I take complete exception to this dormouse, how dare you.! I was not moaning about my choice of profession. I became a stewardess and have missed christmas and family occasions etc for many many years and was happy to do so, because i was in a quite secure job, with a hope of promotion and an ok income.
I am certainly not happy to do it for the pittance they now want to pay us, the longer hours, the lack of promotion and the lack of SAFETY for passengers.

We are not striking to take anything out on comletely innocent people, we were striking to STOP our wages and terms and conditions being taken away. The people moaning about their ruined christmases should think twice before being so worried about jetting away on their fancy holidays and thinking that's more important than someone's livelihood.
 you are the perfect example of someone who cannot see beyond the end of their own nose.

I see your complete frustration, as shown In your post! You and your collegues are not alone In understanding your position. Unfortunately some people will never see the need to struggle, wedded as they are to the system we all endure!
