I don't think that most posters (I know there are exceptions) mean to be nasty. Sometimes when you have to put your thoughts down in writing though they come across as harsh (or even rude). I'm sure we have all posted things that have come out the wrong way. Another poster comes along and take offence and hey presto you end up defending yourself for saying something you didn't mean to say (in that way). I do dislike it when people have a sly dig at you and put a smiley at the end. Are they being sarcastic?
I don't usually venture in the MSA as I find a lot of the posting trivial one liners and not much real discussion goes on there. That's not to say I don't think it has it's place, but it's not my cup of tea.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

Precisely Poppy! MSA is not everyone's cup of tea, no board or thread can possibly be. With this large number of users it's a good thing there's somewhere for everyone. The way I see it, if I don't like a board or a thread, I stay away and let others get on with it, but I expect some people have to try and control things for others.
I also agree with your observation that sometimes we say things in a way that is taken wrongly by somebody somewhere. We can't win them all.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
My two pence worth:
I go onto a teachers forum and it is a horrid horrid place. I very rarely post but venture there to keep myself updated with my subject etc.
As a teacher, I am ashamed of their bullying playground tactics. I have not seen the sort of tactics and bullying I see there on here.
Reason-this site is well moderated and the not so nice postings are contained as there is the MSA and the Discussion forum. On this teachers website, its a free for all.
Believe me, its a lot worse out there. I come onto here cos I like the feel of the forums and if i need advice, i find ppl are sincere and genuinely want to help.Respond to every call that excites your spirit.0 -

Agree entirely. This site is well run and there are thousands of worse forums on the net. Incidentally does anybody know how many mods there are on MSE.

There would appear to be 5 Abuse Controllers to deal with the forums, 11 members of MSE staff (including Martin) who work on the articles and techie side of the site, and 30 non-paid volunteer Board Guides to attempt the day to day organisation of the boards.
