Wow £3500 is a hideous amount (further up the thread) and £1350 for just two is plain stupid IMHO -

Agreed! This is the message we are trying to get across to people reading this and other threads on electrical radiators

There have been posts on MSE of people paying £1,600 for a single radiator(not Rointe in that case)

The objection is that they are sold, often to older folk, with carefully worded 'claims' that they have special properties that make them ultra economical!
  • - two of these slitheringly placed will do it - no fitting or service costs
    - yes you could heat to the same heat & energy cost levels with bog standard panel or skirt heaters
    - and save 90% of the £1350 which would pay the heating cost of your orangery for more than several years
    - and if you put sufficient initial kW into panel or skirt, you won't need to switch it on 4 hours before you need it

  • Thanks to everyone for their help on this. The original units I was recommended are history!!

I think either the addition of two extra radiators to the existing system or looking at the air to air heat pump is going to be the way forward. I am not sure of the cost of the latter yet but they have the advantage of providing some cooling in the summer.

Full building regs are required for the new room so it will be a thermally efficient. The north and west facing sides are almost entirely 300mm thick brick with 100mm thermal block in the centre. Windows and patio doors going to have A rated glass while the atrium is made of Celsius clear.

Lots of good pointers to getting the right solution so thanks to one and all.
  • My goodness, what a good job I Googled Rointe and found this thread.

My elderly electric warm air heating system is becoming almost impossible to repair and I have been looking at the option of installing night storage heating .

I had practically decided on Dimpex NSH and contacted a website which supposedly puts people in touch with three approved local tradesmen who would give me quotes for installing 2 or 3 heaters .

The first electrician has been in touch and almost convinced me that installing Rointe was the way to go because they are supposedly more efficient and cheaper to run than NSH. I hesitated because I couldn't understand the logic behind how paying for heating using a day rate could work out cheaper than using economy 7.
I could cancel using economy 7 and have one rate possible for a sum between the two rates in which case it seemed to me I might as well buy standard oil filled radiators for a fraction of the cost of
    Rointe heaters.

So thank you all for confirming my thoughts. I am not an electrician just an elderly lady who tries to use logic when approaching problems and I will now return to the original idea of NSH.
I will also be wary or sites recommending tradesman :D.

    Welcome to the forum.

Excellent post; however you would be amazed at how many people believe that Rointe and other similarly priced heaters must be more efficient than a heater costing a fraction of the price.

Just a point on Economy 7, if you are not already aware. There is a huge difference these days in tariffs from various companies; so it is worth checking on a comparison website. I believe Scottish Power for E7 are cheapest for most people these days.

Thank You Cardew :) I keep up to date with price comparison and am currently on a fixed deal with OVO.
  • Hi, I have just been reading through this thread and wow, I am a bit confused on what to do now. I have looked at some electric radiators including the rointe one.
Ok I have storage heaters. I used them last winter on E7 but found them still cold and I still plugged in a £10 heater. This year I have switched to a normal tariff and not used my storage heaters and just used a plug in £10 and it has worked out cheaper but I have still been cold at the coldest points of the winter. I like the plug in heater but my concern is having it on a timer when no one is in the house as the elements do glow slightly and it has just started to make a slight noise every now and again, that there is risk of fire. I am looking for something that is a bit safer and I would be comfortable having come on with a timer before I get in from work and when I go to bed at night. I don't mind spending a bit of ££ to get something good but I want something right. I have looked at the rointe and there 1600w is £402. I have looked at economy radiators.com and there 1600w is £294. I have looked at panel heaters ranging from £80-150.
Can anyone please help in which is best and safe and also not cost the earth to run.
    Thanks in Advance

Look at an established brand like Dimplex.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Hi the plug in heaters I have are dimplex but as they are the heater coil I am just really scared to come home to a burning house and was looking for something that I felt was more trustworthy. But I need something so I will see what's on the market, thanks.
