    Got evidence for this?
As far as I can remember all the policies I’ve had over the last 30 years have had the other cars third party extension and none have required the other car to be insured in its own right.

Most policies actually do have this. There are very few that allow a car thats not insured in its own right to be driven on "other vehicle".

Most policies do not have this, I can only think of three companies out of dozens and dozens of companies that insist on this.

Does the car have tax or not?

Just scaremongering. Unnecessary poor advice. "Most" policies don't "actually" have this.

The better advice would be that before using the "driving other cars" extension, we should check that our policy is one of the very few that imposes any conditions on the other car having its own insurance.

Well I must be unlucky and chosen every single insurer over the last several years which required the car to be insured in its own right. Latest insurer is Swiftcover.

So give me the names of five which you claim don't require a car to be insured in its own right.

As you didn't say please, won't expect a thank you!

    RAC/Morethan/Aviva/Pru/Churchill

Your swiftcover policy is not in line with the mainstream insurers over other areas (eg you have agreed to them reparing your car with "recycled parts", they insist you have a MOT in place at all times (if one is required), any claim for glass will result in the loss of any NCD earned during the policy year)

It's easier to point out which companies do have the requirement that the other car must have it's own Insurance as they are in such a minority. The ones who have the requirement for the other car tend to be the very cheap and cheerful Insurers such as your Swiftcover policy and Chaucer.

Quentin you ommited one of the other unusual parts of the Swiftcover policy which is the voluntary excess applies to fire and theft claims as well which is fairly unusual.

Interesting things you say about swiftcover, seems a bit cheap and nasty to me. My mother is insured comp with Zurich, and has the other cars extension thing (no mention of other car having its own insurance). But when we rang up and asked they said yes, the other car must have its own policy. :S
