No Insurance?!

Right. OH got pulled in my car the other night for no seat belt. Has asked to produce insurance.
We have lost insurance certificate in the move and they've re sent us the letter today (the last day we can produce) We honestly thought that he had 3rd party cover to drive my car with my permission - he's got fully comp on his as do I on mine. Can't find anywhere that says it on document though.....

Whats going to happen to us?!

Obviously we will take insurance to police as don't want to be done for failing to produce, would be better to produce the wrong thing than nothing at all?

  • points and a fine for no insurance, probably

I assumed as much, will call insurance provider, someone crashed into his car last week, so his insurance will rocket next year. but hey ho. It's our own silly fault.

Any idea what police will do when they look at documents and tell us they're wrong?

We've got the certificate it arrived today, i've not had a chance to look at it but OH can't see any mention of being allowed to drive other cars, we thought it did, they took the reg when was stopped and insurance wasn't mentioned as car is insured through my insurance,

I'm going to dig out my insurance when i get home to see what it says.

We are better going to the station to show what documents we do have though? rather than not producing at all?

If your OH is over 25 it seems strange this clause is not included in his insurance, however I have a feeling some policies which allow you to drive any car 3rd party SPECIFICALLY EXCLUDE the car of a partner. Check very carefully!

So is he on your insunce or not?

No because we thought his insurance for his car covered him 3rd party on cars that weren't his.

he is 25, so we thought that he would be covered, this is going to take some research I think, but we don't really have the time, it needs to be produced today!

That's what happens when you assume.

Shouldn't be a problem in the future though. There's not that many companies will cover someone with a conviction for no insurance and those that do charge thousands. ;)

Take his cover note and let them record the details and check it themselves rather than producing nothing.

If he is covered to drive other peoples cars, it is shown on the document which is marked "Certificate of Insurace".

If you look under the section which is headed along the lines of "Persons covered to drive" it will confirm who is actually covered to drive his car eg "Insured only or Insured and Mrs X" If he has driving other cars it will also say in the same area something along the lines of "The policyholder may also driver other cars not belonging to him or hired to him under a hire purchase agreement" (It sometimes also notes that it excludes driving a partner or spouses car under this section).

If your not sure ring his Insurers and ask them to confirm if he has driving other cars (They do not always give the correct answer though so check the Certificate which is the document you should produce to the police)
