Food poisoning

  • Gordikin you beat me to it - I was going to say exactly the same thing and if this is the case, then the restaurant could surely not be liable. Food poisoning takes longer to develop and would last longer.

No it doesn't! I was taken ill once at work after about an hour after eating a take-out shellfish pasta salad. My symptoms were similar, started off feeling a bit sicky, then hot and sweaty, followed by horrible cramps and finally collapsed in the Ladies. I was ambulanced to hosiptal, which was a bit embarrassing, but I wasn't in any state to argue. The diarrhea was horrendous and lasted for several hours.

I was discharged later that day, but was in a right sorry mess. The only difference from the OP was, I was off eating for 2 or 3 days, and only felt right again after about 5 days.
  • Did you not notice the paragraph before the one you quoted?

"Staphylococcal food poisoning is a gastrointestinal illness. It is caused by eating foods contaminated with toxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus . The most common way for food to be contaminated with Staphylococcus is through contact with food workers who carry the bacteria or through contaminated milk and cheeses. Staphylococcus is salt tolerant and can grow in salty foods like ham. As the germ multiplies in food, it produces toxins that can cause illness. Staphylococcal toxins are resistant to heat and cannot be destroyed by cooking. Foods at highest risk of contamination with Staphylococcus aureus and subsequent toxin production are those that are made by hand and require no cooking. Some examples of foods that have caused staphylococcal food poisoning are sliced meat, puddings, some pastries and sandwiches."

Your problem is you've decided it is the duck eggs and are determined to make the evidence fit. Take a step back and look what else could have caused the food poisoning - like the salad!

Also try doing a quick google for "duck eggs food poisoning", if you did that you'd find the most common cause is Salmonella. Symptoms of Salmonellosis appear after about 12 hours and last for several days.

I agree that it is extremely unlikely to be Salmonella and my original post was wrong to suggest it might be the duck egg or salmonella. As I don't know the actual incubation time, the fact that I recovered so quickly and also bacause I fainted, it would seem that it could be Staphylococcus aureus. If so, the incubation time is normally 1 to 7 hours. So it could be anything I ate in that time frame. I finished lunch around 1pm and arrived at the restaurant at 8pm (without eating anything else). We had some olives and someting that seemed like crab paste on biscuits prior to the meals. I then had fried duck egg on a slice of black pudding with some crispy bacon for starter plus rolls and butter. My main was shin of beef and vegetables. I only started developing symptons after finishing the main course (probably around 10pm). Now draw your own conclusions.

I don't see anywhere in the above that you were diagnosed with food poisoning....it looks like an allergic reaction.

That wasnt food poisoning , it was the winter vomiting bug

    Do you have a source?

I'm not doubting you...I'm merely interested, as the last that I read was that the UK Health Protection Agency had determined that it was contaminated Colchester oysters. Moreover, Blumenthal himself and the supplier concerned also conceded that this was the probable cause.

I think it was generally reported as the Winter Vomiting Bug after the problem, which I do think was more than a little convenient! However contaminated oysters is much more interesting...as would be a link...please!

Another example of a troll wasting his time or another example of a whiner who hasnt a pair of knackers to speak up for themselves.?

Are you for real? How on earth is the OP being a troll or a whiner?

So far as I can see, he had a genuine concern and was totally open to the opinions of those who replied sensibly. His subsequent postings bear this out.

If you are so concerned about trolls or time wasters, why bother wasting your own time by participating?

  • I thought I got food poisoning from a Chinese takeaway after being extremely ill the next day. My boyfriend had the exact same symptoms (he had eaten it too). We were convinced that it was the takeaway.

Then we went to my parents' and 2 days later my brother had the symptoms. Turned out it was the Norovirus.

Doesn't Listeria live on lettuce? I may be wrong. Otherwise, there's gastroenteritis (stomach flu) to consider as well.
