I think thats the entire point of the song. Who are you (or any body else) to tell me (or any one else who listens to music) what I should listen to.
For me the song is the embodiment of what MSE is all about, and that is being the consumer that I want to be and not a consumer that is manilupated by stores/insurance companies/banks/advertisements/any one who wants me to part with my money0 -
Traditionally the week after Christmas is the worst for music sales. This was in the days of physical singles. Bands like Iron Maiden would exploit this fact and time their singles release in the hope of getting a number one. I think the Pet Shop Boys may also have done this. There is a Facebook campaign the have "Anarchy in the UK" at number one next week. That would be funny if smiling Joe failed again.....unfortunately he will be number one though. But what matters is Simon Cowell didn't get his number one this week. The people of the UK have given him a bloody nose. The Shelter charity received an unexpected Christmas as well.AT 1st SEPTEMBER 2009

Honestly? Yes. It's a really catchy tune.
It may sound ironic with the lyrics "f**k you I won't do what you tell me" but the point of the campaign was simply to change things if you were sick of X-Factor hogging the Christmas No. 1 spot. That couldn't have been done if we all bought whatever we fancied instead. It would have lost the fun, and any effectiveness.
I'm sure the majority of people, even if they weren't keen on RATM, bought it instead of X-Factor because they are at least a band that play their own instruments and write their own songs, and it was preferable to a sugary ballad by a pretty face that will probably be forgotten in no time at all (no offense Joe fans, just my opinion).
Sure I would have preferred something festive (still gutted The Darkness didn't get No. 1 with 'Don't Let The Bells End'! but it was getting ridiculous and I'm hoping things will be different next year.
smnb08- I do get your meaning but to be fair we haven't had anything christmassy in ages now. The cover of Tears for Fears 'Mad World' was a downer for me- good song (better off left alone in my opinion) but how depressing on Christmas day!0 -

How ever what you are your children listen is entirely for you and your kids to decide. I know you are entitled to an opinion to, but that doesnt mean I have to agree with you. I will politely disagree.
As for liking the song, it really is a fantastic tune or I would not have bought it. Using the F word is just another way of expressing an opinion. I suppose this song is just RATM opinion.0
