Why does it cost a fortune to keep fit?

Do you have a dog you could take for walks?
Or maybe a gentle bike ride to start off withLife is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
20p savers club = £8.00
£2.00 savers club = £0.00 (£100 banked)

I know what you mean, and often you get bored of the gym anyway.
Find yourself some local dance/salsa/aerobics classes. Often cheaper than gym subs and keep you motivated to go back. Try local church halls, lots on there.
Or you could always run - costs nothing.
Or invest in a vid?0 -
I love:
Cycling - my bike cost me £120 (half price in a sale
) but only minor ongoing maintenance costs. I'll go out getting away from town by myself, and friends and I go to places like forests, lakes with trails round etc. You can enter some charity bike rides very cheaply (I'm on one next weekend that's a fiver).
Badminton - I play doubles with 3 other friends. A court for an hour will cost us about £2 each. My racquet was £2.99 at a Donnay outlet store.
Swimming - few quid a time at the local sports centre.
Walking - if I'm stressed there's nothing better than a long walk to work it off. Best of all this is one that's completely free.
Between all of the above I probably do spend £20-25 a month, but if money's tight I can skip the things that cost. With a gym you're committed to that payment.0 -

I'm glad it's not just me! I'm not (according to the weight/height charts) actually overweight, but being so petite, I feel a little 'sumo' like at the moment rather than dainty! :rotfl:Its nice to be important but more important to be nice!0 -
I keep fit by walking. I don't hold a driving licence and are trying since Dec. to cut down on my bus pass (34pound/month) so I walk everywhere I need to go to. Can't afford the gym.
Sorry to hear you have been attacked in the past. I don't know if you think it is a good idea but have a look at this site. http://www.mjelectronics.com/pages/new/dyewitness.html
My mother-in-law runs a caring agency an have given one of these to all her staff for the night shift to protect themselves with (no one have had to use it yet though)
Thought it might be an idea to help you feel safer.0 -
Since moving to within a mile and a half of work, I cycle and walk everywhere. Even when I was 12 miles and more from work, I would try to cycle there or back at least once a week along some nice country lanes.
As a result of the move, I sold my car and my finances are looking good.
Seriously, consider your lifestyle in terms of walking and cycling. I don't have to worry about exercising at all since it's all part of my daily routine. If it rains, I walk with a brolly; if it's dry, I love cycling.0 -
I've always wondered at the logic behind driving to a gym, and as for paying to sweat in front of a lot of strangers...

Walking costs nothing, and as others have said, if you do it with a mate it can be great fun.
Much more important tho is eating well and sensibly, and drinking LOTS of water!
Good Luck with your quest:T:wave:
Success is a journey, not a destination. So stop running!0 -
Big Lad is a personal trainer who needs more clients maybe he can help? Also as for the attack some years ago become a dogwalker and be paid for walking?
A friend of me was attacked so she wouldn't go out alone. She has a PHD and is over 50 and suddenly decided to take up karate. She is someone who doesn't do things by halves. She is taking her grand master (what about Mellie Mel?) exam this July. She goes walking again now!!!!:j

I love swimming and cycling and at least the cycling is free. I did the Manchester to Liverpool bike ride today and apart from getting wet feel great for it. Set yourself a goal, maybe a 5k walk/run next year and then you have somethin to aim at. Good luck!January budget

Sorry for stating the obvious, but if jogging is out of the question because your "assets" become liabilities, why not try horizontal jogging instead where your assets stay assets?
It burns off lots of calories and has many other great benefits too. And of course, it's FREE (usually)
