Why does it cost a fortune to keep fit?

I'm currently looking to lose some weight, get a self esteem boost and improve my health, and was looking to join a gym. Having done some research though, I'm beginning to lose interest due to the sheer cost!
The gym local to my work wants me to sign up for 10 months at £28.00/mth + £10 joining fee, and all of the gyms near my home want a 12 month contract, and between £25.00 and £50.00 a month!
I'm really struggling because although I have the very best intentions, I'm on a 6 month fixed term contract at work and could be up the creek without a paddle in January.
Does anyone have any moneysaving :money: ways of staying fit? I'd love to be one of those people who enjoy running but it makes my shins and boobs ache!!!

I would love to join a gym but have no-one to watch the kids while I go. I have started running (I understand the boob thing
) and I have found a nice track and really enjoy it.
I also like workout videos, its best to have a few so that you dontget bored of just one, I have carmen electras striptease set, where you learn lapdance, floorwork and other moves and their is also a hip hop dvd in there (all of which apeals to my dace background) and they are fab for toning up and getting rid of a few inches. I also have tae bo which is massively high cardio work, I get tired out in the warm up but it is so enjoyable to do because you really start to see a difference after a few gos.
I got the box set of carmen electras from amazon for about £25 and the tae bo was on sale at WHS smith for £3 so for one months gym fee I got those which I can use when I want and for as long as I want.Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0 -
Do you have a council or uni gym local? My council gym lets me pay by the session, or prepay monthly.
80% of losing weight is down to your diet tho (not necessarily eating less, just eating right - you might find out you're supposed to eat more than you currently do)
Apart from that, try 'active living' - walking more, taking the stairs instead of the lift etc
Or if you can buy a 2nd hand weights set cheaply, you can exercise at home.0 -
seriously, walking is the best way really. why not walk on your lunchtime, when you're around alot of people in a nice busy area. also look for cheap exercise videos on ebay, that's a good way to go about it. do you have a local subsidised leisure centre or swimming pool, swimming is also an excellent way to keep fit.
dancing around the house is also quite wonderful!!MFW Newbie - #17. (#116 in 2019)

You could try freecycle for a piece of home gym equipment, or a bike....
I can't do the running thing either - note to guys: sports bras only work for a certain amount of boob, there are those of us who bounce no matter how much corsetry tries to hold us down. :rotfl:Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

I find gym workouts boring to be honest and I work strange hours, often away on business trips etc so it's not a good idea to spend my money on joining a gym.
I have started walking for at least an hour with my OH on a Sunday, if you don't have a OH have you got a friend who wants to keep fit? I also have a treadmill at home but it's hard to get the motivation to use it.0
