King Size Bed & Mattress

Hi All,
The bed sold for the price of £250, we were lined up to place a bid, but the seller did not get back to us about the brand etc, so we left it. Maybe a bargain, maybe not.
Without knowing where it has come from, we cant tell as i found a mahogany sleigh bed for just under £300 online new.
No new bed, No new mattress needed.0 -
Shoppers/buyers are not nearly as stupid as you think Tim, frankly I find you assuming everyone is an idiot to be very condesending & rude, do you really think that little of your customer base
You have just proved my point. I have never said that consumers are idiots. You don't have to be an idiot to be taken in by clever marketing and hype. This is why marketing works.
Take Silentnight for example. 90% of the population think they are a good brand, and this is due to marketing. The truth is they have one of the worst reliability records in the industry.
Take Peugeot for example. Many people think they are good cars because they are very popular. They are very popular because of clever marketing. However they have poor build quality and reliability.
Much of the bed industry convinced consumers that non turn mattresses were for their convenience. When the truth is that the mattresses are non turn to cut production costs, and will mean that you have to replace your mattress more often.
Many bed manufacturers convinced consumers that pillow top mattresses were a good thing due to them being very comfortable. The truth is that the fillings can move about, leaving you sleeping in a hollow. A pillow top also makes the mattress non turn.
Many manufacturers convinced the consumer that the continuous spring system was the best thing since sliced bread. But now most manufacturers have stopped using them due to their terrible reliability and noise.
So don't tell me that consumers aren't convinced by marketing.Large chain stores are sucessful because they give people what they want.
If you believe that then you really are nieve. As you spend so much time on MSE, then you should know better than that. All the threads complaining about the big chain stores should tell you that your statement is very wrong.
The reason big chain stores are successful is 80% down to marketing, and 20% down to convenience due to the location and size of the stores.
Most people don't buy beds very often, and for this reason they don't tend to know very much about them. When people contact me they usually just say something like 'I'm looking for a good quality king size mattress'. Now this sort of customer is a dream come true to many sales staff, because they can push them towards the mattress that earns them the most commision. In fact often they will tell them that they also need to get a new base to go with their new mattress. The reason many sales staff do this is because this is how they are trained to sell. They will smooth talk the customer into thinking that they are getting a good deal, even thowing a couple of pillows in (which cost them peanuts). These sales tactics are based on psychology.
If sales staff were giving us what we wanted, then they would be 100% honest, and would ask us loads of questions in order to get an idea of the most suitable mattress. If the customer didn't need to spend as much as they thought then they should advise them to buy the cheaper model, but how many times do you know of that happening?I do not feel I have been ripped off by Dreams, my bed is the most comfortable I have ever owned (like sleeping on a cloud springs to mind) & I am more than happy with it. If I could afford another for my DD I would buy a second.
I am very happy for you that you find your mattress comfortable, and it is very fortunate that you could afford as expensive a mattress as the Kildare. I'm sure the sales staff are very happy also. However how many mattresses have you actually slept on long term throughout your life, and how many of them were memory foam? Due to being in the industry I know how the mattresses are made, and I know which give the best support, and I know the true value of the mattresses, and I know all the gimmicks used by sales staff and manufacturers. And this knowledge enables me to help people make the right choice without being over charged, or sold something that is unsuitable.
I have received some abuse from some people in the past. This is mainly because people can't believe that someone in the trade can actually give out honest information without any personal gain. Well as I have said previously, I also give out advice on fire safety, and electroplating, but I don't gain from those either.
The truth is that I hate to see people being ripped off. and I hope that when I need to buy a product that I don't have an in depth knowledge of, that there will be someone out there who knows the industry, and can help me make the right choice.

You will probably find that most mahogany beds in that sort of price range would be imported. This doesn't mean that they aren't any good, but it is unlikely that knowing the make would be any use at all.
One thing you could do if you find another on ebay from a retailer, is ask previous buyers of the same product what they think of it.0 -

Yes, the brand will make a difference, as i can look for that brand online, and find a price for that bed. Compare the difference and work out if it was a bargain. One thing you could do if you find another on ebay from a retailer, is ask previous buyers of the same product what they think of it.
Tried, eBay would not let me mail them.0 -

Unfortunately very few retailers will actually display the manufacturers name for imported beds. So you would be very lucky to find one.Alias_Omega wrote: »Tried, eBay would not let me mail them.
Do you mean they kept the buyers names private?0 -
